Grant's move today makes me want to dance:

Grant is the Bizarro Stepien when it comes to trades involving first round picks. Well done, sir.

Bump. Grant certainly develops into a trade genius... getting first round picks for Sessions and Leuer ;-) What's next, another 1st rounder for Boobie?

Based on what CG has been pulling off, a 1st for Boobie isn't enough, I want Dwight:cool:

I'll give Grant a 10 the day he can use all these assets to bring in a bonafide star from a trade or free agency. Danny Ferry was an amazing swindler too, he never got us Bibby, Jason Kidd, Gerald Wallace, Andre Igoudala, Zach Randolph, Amare or anybody else.

It's a blessing in disguise that he never got those pieces, perhaps LeBron would have stayed, and thus none of this possible?

Bottom Line is Danny Ferry could never bring us in a complimentary star player. Im not even talking about superstar like Melo or Westbrook I'm talking about a fringe all-star...... Josh Smith, Randolph, Iggy, Amare..... I don't consider any of them to be superstars, they are all fringe all stars, and Danny Ferry couldn't land ANY of them, or anything comparable to them.

Hopefully Chris learned something from Danny..... Ultimately, if you want to be a great gm you have to know when to pull the trigger. It's debatable if the Cavaliers really had any of those deals on the table, but let's be realistic, everyone's available..... you just have to be willing to pay the high price.....

Grant has a LOT of ammo to play with, let's see if he can land us some players, that's the only thing separating himself from being a great GM. So far so good.

It's easy to say that now. But back then we had the best record 2 years in a row. The team was like a well oiled machine in the regular season. It all fell apart in the post-season. But it’s not like Ferry didn’t try. We were VERY VERY close to Amare. But Ferry did bring in fringe All-Star guys…Shaq, Mo, Jamison. All those guys were like the ones you mentioned.

I don’t blame Ferry for anything he did, or didn’t do. The guy put together a team that won 60+ games 2 years in a row! The major flaw was our main 2 pieces (LBJ and Mo) never could deliver in crunch time.

Yea, Ferry did manage to bring in fringe all-stars as mentioned above. Maybe not Shaq, but Mo Williams actually made the all-star team during his team here and Jamison, at least at that time, looked about as good as a Jason Kidd or Josh Smith.

This dude is a genius! :king: ... 2 first round picks for Sessions lol :chuckles:

Gravedigging threads is strictly forbidden.

Except in this case. Grant deserves plenty of credit tonight for the Lakers trade.

3.

You don't take reaches in the NBA (Thompson), even if they do in fact pan out (Waiters). Take BPA always. ALWAYS.

Your logic is completely flawed and mirrors that of the average fan. What you consider a reach was most likely considered the closest thing to a "sure thing" by the people doing the draft. I have to trust a guy that dedicates his life to evaluating talent, and has every tool available used to judge a player to decide who is the BPA over an armchair GM.

Also, hindsight is always 20/20. If you are rating a GM you have to rate him based on decisions made with the information that was available to him at the time of the move that was made. Doing anything else is an exercise in futility.

I would give Grant a solid 8. He has shown to have an extremely deep understanding of the cap situation, has not over-committed to any one piece to maintain flexibility, and has made in my opinion extremely intelligent trade / draft decisions given the information and availability of players when the transaction happened.

You're randomly quoting a post from November, you realize that? Anyway, this thread was started back when Thompson still sucked. He's improved TREMENDOUSLY since then. I'm sure Pyro would change his tune if you asked him, now.

haha, my bad for some reason this is the first time that I have read through this thread. That even furthers my point though with the whole hindsight thing =p

Know this thread was dug up from earlier in the season but was thinking how what Chris Grant had been looking for in trades needs to change. All his deals so far have primarily been financially based with the Cavs taking on other teams contracts or helping them with luxury tax issues and getting draft picks for doing it. That's fine and he's done a nice job accumulating picks. Now the trades he makes need to be about talent and trying to acquire the right pieces to improve the team. He hasn't had to do that yet on the trade market so it will be interesting to see what happens.

This is where we package some of those 1st round picks up to get a guy that we want. Those 1st rounders are valuable, they're great chips to use in a talent-acquiring trade.
