Chris Grant - Cavaliers GM

Know this thread was dug up from earlier in the season but was thinking how what Chris Grant had been looking for in trades needs to change. All his deals so far have primarily been financially based with the Cavs taking on other teams contracts or helping them with luxury tax issues and getting draft picks for doing it. That's fine and he's done a nice job accumulating picks. Now the trades he makes need to be about talent and trying to acquire the right pieces to improve the team. He hasn't had to do that yet on the trade market so it will be interesting to see what happens.

Yeah, we're at the point where the "rebuild" just becomes the "build". At least he has handled the first part well and has accumulated a lot of picks. We'll see if his draft picks (past and future) and his future trades enable the Cavs to move forward.

A+++ for the Sessions trade.

I don't see how anyone can grade Grant anything other than an A on draft pick management and how to successfully run a 2 year tank.

The grade for actual draft pick selection is a work in progress, both because we need at least 1-2 more years to see the development arc of Dion, Tristan, and Zeller and also because he has so many other picks to make in the coming drafts.

Since the past two years has been about draft pick acquisition and making sure our own draft picks were high, I don't see how any one can grade him at all yet on roster management. What he decides to do FA wise in 2013 and/or 2014 will be key to that grade or alternately he may rather than sign a guy outright look to pull a Harden type trade with guys like Cousins, Aldridge, Love, George etc.

He got us irving.waiters.thompson.zeller and stayed away from batum and other players that would make us the hawks. I give him a A (not taking drummond but you cant blame him 8 other teams passed), also he will get an A+ after 2014 when you add in our pick this year and one of (deng or granger)

He's done well so far, but there's a lot of work to be done.

This draft is paramount, and Grant knows it which is why he's already set himself up to have the chance to make some magic happen

He's done well and should stay on but I agree IBWT that this draft will make or break his future here

This is a key offseason..Grant has to upgrade this team significantly or it's going to get worse than it is .

He's been very good about staying away from certain players other "experts" or fans love and has proven to be correct. I think our scouting department is top notch and i have faith we'll once again come forth with a player to help us move forward.

Chris Grant also will have to see if there are any vets out there who can help fill in our bench. We've got the youth angle down pat, we need to add guys who are winners who can provide bench support. Ellington being resigned would be a positive in that area. As a starter i very much didn't like seeing him out there but as a bench player, he was perfect.

Yea I see us packaging that second pick for a vet

With the addition of another top 5 guy along with the second first round pick, and the likelihood that Varejao plays much more in 2013-14, this team is now going to move into the 30-35 win group almost by accident. Thus, I doubt this team will be picking top 7 again with their own pick and if they do, something has probably gone very wrong. The quality of the top 5 guy and the development of Thompson and Waiters will tell the story of whether this team can move into the 40+ win club next season and be poised to do more in a couple of years. But bottom line, you don't win championships in the NBA by building brick by brick with decent players. You need to get the superstar that jolts the team to contender. With the 2013 team and LeBron, this team is elite. Without him, they still need to find another superstar, and likely it needs to be the guy picked this year.

Highly unlikely you'll find the superstar you're looking for in this draft.

Im really liking the Danny Granger Idea!! I feel like with hin, Andy coming back and another good draft we could make some noise

I know is not thread for it, but does anyone know if there is some live stream of Cavs press conference that should be today?

Thanks

If nothing else Andy will have a friend to sit on the bench in street clothes with.

In past years, this type of event has been streamed from cavs.com. I don't see any link there now. Someone will post it if it happens (probably in its own thread).

I look for Grant to make a big move this off-season, acquiring a vet, near all-star for AV or our (lakers) pick. If things go poorly next year, Grant's job will be in jeopardy. I think back to when Boston was thinking of letting Danny Ainge go, and he made the Garnett and Ray Allen trades. Time for Grant to step up and make the big moves. I predict this will be the most interesting off-season in a decade
