The Jonas V thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
expected, hibbert is the seasoned vet feeding off the hype the toronto crowd is giving jonas and playing inspired. it's a good fight, i don't expect jonas to be a 18 and 11 dude, just there to be the glue guy of the team.

I know he added some LBs, but dude still has a way to go with his body, otherwise he'll be in foul trouble all the time like he is tonight.

He doesn't have to tell that to Minnesota, Memphis, or the Clips because they already know. They pretty much prove his point. They all played the lotto game and eventually Love, Griffin, Rubio and Gay arrived. Problem was they sucked so bad at picking that it took em the better part of a decade or more to resurrect their teams.

You may not like Grants drafts so far, but he's got a long long long way to go to join the bottom of the barrel ranks of Kahn and Dunleavy's train wreck pasts, and the fact that his first pick was Kyrie already gives him an insulation those teams never had. They had to draft a half dozen dudes or more to finally hit

Exactly. Has this guy seen Minnesota, Memphis, and the Clippers lately? All of them overcame their management's utter incompetence and numerous failed or mediocre draft picks to become playoff teams. Well, maybe I'm jumping the gun on Minnesota, but if Kevin Love and Rubio both come back healthy I think it's reasonable to expect them to at least be a playoff team. The Clippers and Grizzlies are both obviously playoff teams, and Memphis in particular was widely considered a huge sleeper team the year before last until Randolph went down last year with injuries and the team never really recovered. Too bad, too, because the Grizzlies were a very likable team. I'd describe them as Thunder-Lite.

And do you know why Charlotte is so bad? Because they realized their ceiling was a first round elimination, traded away all of their half-decent players, and spent last year on the express train to Shitterville. It worked. They got the second pick in the draft and picked a guy I'm sure almost every Cavs fan wanted: Michael Kidd-Gilchrist. Now, to be fair, I think MKG is going to struggle mightily this year, but mostly due to the fact that his teammates suck and also that he's really more of a third banana and team leader than a first or second option. Unfortunately, Charlotte barely had a fifth or sixth option when they drafted him, so he's probably going to blow this year.

And saying that Charlotte has only had one playoff appearance in team history is a bit disingenuous. They've only been around eight years. It's not like they're the Warriors, who've had something like one playoff appearance in the past 18 years. And even the Warriors are a bad example because they generally draft well, but their stupid management kept tearing the team apart before they could get anywhere. Remember that amazing Warriors team that beat the Mavs in round one a few years back? Yeah, they were awesome, at least until the next year when management inexplicably tore the whole thing down.

And yet none of those teams would have made the playoffs if it wasn't for trades, and in the case of Minni they still haven't. Their picks had little to do with making the playoffs... The Clippers are proof that playing the lotto game every year will not make you a playoff team. They were in the lotto for 90 some odd % of the time their franchise has been in existance, which has been more than 30 years.

Tyler Zeller can stop Hibbert. What can Jonas do? :chuckles:

#insertTrollface

Jonas looks like hes actually having an alright game. 12 pts 10 rebounds. Biggest downside other than his defense is he has shot 15 times and hasn't taken 1 free throw even.

I like Toronto's game plan to get Aaron Gray and Jonas V in there at Center to allow Bargnani to play PF. Kinda like what Dallas did with Dirk.

12 & 10 sounds good, but 6 for 15 in 23 minutes is a lot of shots and a lot of misses in not a lot of time for a big man. His 6 offensive rebounding, however, is very promising - and maybe his shaky shooting was nerves.

The Clippers were on their way to the playoffs even before the Chris Paul trade. They had Blake Griffin, who is obviously very talented. They had Eric Gordon, who when healthy is one of the best young SGs in the league. They had Eric Bledsoe, who is a good young defensive-minded point guard. They also had DeAndre Jordan and Aminu, both of whom were talented defensive players. Further, if they hadn't stupidly traded their unprotected draft pick to us because their owner hated Baron Davis, they would have had a lottery pick in the 2011 draft (although no one can say it would have still been Kyrie because their record may have been different). You can't honestly tell me that team wasn't a season or two of experience and a draft pick or two away from the playoffs.

What major trades has Minny made? They drafted Rubio, Pekovic, and Williams. They made a draft-day trade for Love, so they effectively drafted him. Pretty much the rest of their main roster was added in free agency aside from Budinger.

Perhaps they were on their way, but they've been on their way before (47 wins in '05/'06) and then regressed. When a team is run so poorly that they get to the lottery so many times, there's a pretty fair chance they'll find a way to screw up their rebuild. Or perhaps all their players will just want out.

I like his rebounding and length but every time he got the ball and was wide open, he would just chuck it. I think he had 0 free throws in the game lol. That's just ridiculous.

6 of 15 for a big man is horrible... Remember when people were complaining that Dion shot 6 of 14 as a perimiter player, well if a big man is under 50% then it is terrible. If he shoots like this for the whole season I can honestly say i'm glad we passed on him. It's only one game though, and he hopefully turns it around.

How crazy is it that all 5 Atlantic division team have a good chance to make the playoffs.

personally wouldn't say toronto has a "good chance" to make the playoffs. they are (at least) a tier below every other team in their own division, much less the entire east. in fairness that division is really stacked but still.

i do think/hope toronto will be better than the cavs tho. and i will continue to laugh at people who think okc got some unbelievably valuable pick.

Yeah, I just mentioned his crappy shooting a few posts earlier. ;P

But I also mentioned that 6 offensive boards in just 23 minutes is impressive.

Alas, one game does not make a trend - and by all reports he was really nervous.

I wonder if he utilized the patented Lithuanian (trademarked by Zydrunas) backboard volleyball to juice his OREB numbers??? :)

I'm not a Valanciunas homer or anything, but it was his first NBA game. Give the kid some time. Although, to be honest, I am rooting for him to fail just so the Thompson pick is validated.
