The Quarterback prospect thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
No, arm strength isn't about who can lob the ball down the field the farthest. It's about being able to drive the ball down the field crisply on intermediate and deep routes. Show me who can throw the best 15-20 yard out route on a frozen rope, not who can toss the prettiest rainbow bloopers into zero coverage.

Carr wins the arm strength category, but Bortles wins it after all things are considered (aka he's not Derek fucking Carr).

Bingo. Plus arm strength improves as these guys mature but its based on your frame and mechanics. Manziel will struggle to improve on his arm strength based upon his size. He will have to look at mechanics to generate more power. Bortles on the other hand will improve his mechanics and has genetics in his favor.

I think if we are talking about the intermediate throws, Carr wins hands down and thats where Bridgewater's flaws are seen. Bridgewater has a habit of floating passes on those routes. Its what is scary about him.

I'd agree Carr probably has the best natural arm of the QBs available, with Bortles behind him then probably Manziel/TB about equal.

Tom Savage probably has the best arm of everyone though.

Arm strength is definitely more important when it comes to intermediate throws. Brady launches rockets with his intermediate throws, that make is nearly impossibly for defensive backs to get to. You can see defensive backs being a fraction late, because he's able to fit the ball in fast enough before they get to it. If the ball isn't thrown as hard those passes are picked off or batted down. That's where arm strength is needed, because receivers don't get much separation within 10-15 yards at all in the NFL.

In the NFL you have a small window, and only so much time to get the ball there. You need one of two things, a very strong arm like a Tom Brady, or be great at anticipating the throw and where the player will be ahead of time ala Peyton Manning. You don't necessarily need a great arm to succeed in the NFL at a high level, but you must make up with it in a lot of other ways that include superior vision, and with precision throws that are being anticipated ahead of time. If you don't have a strong arm you must be able to get through your reads a lot quicker, otherwise you just won't make it in the NFL.

Johnny Football hasn't shown he can do that. He's not going to get away with scrabbling around in the pocket, waiting for guys to get open. This in the NFL, lineman run a 4.5 in a 40 too!

Pretty solid discussion in this thread. I'll have to follow more.

SWEET MOTHER OF CHRIST! CAN WE MOVE ON FROM JOHNNY MANZIEL!?

There are plenty of other QB prospects to debate, for example - Tom Savage. He is my sleeper pick for the most successful next to Bortles.

Thank you.

How about we let people talk about what they want to talk about? Nobody wants to talk about 4th round QB prospects that will probably blow and I don't blame them.

Let's talk about Jimmy Garoppolo

He has the same problem as Bridgewater. He tends to throw high on his intermediate throws. It's fixable, but usually ball placement is really tough to teach in the NFL.

It's funny, because I think Carr near the bottom of my list of QB's I want, but he may have the best intermediate throw in his arsenal. The problem is he cannot make that throw when pressured. I'm not sure if I've ever seen Football make that throw.

It's pretty clear when you watch Bortles that he can make every throw on the field with ease. Just needs some consistency.

Savage to me is Derek Anderson 2.0. He didn't throw allot of interceptions, but his lack of pocket awareness and not great completion percentage will really hurt.

So we talk about a QB that is over hyped, undersized, and also will probably blow? Alrighty then..

Who gives a fuck? Why dictate what people talk about? Jesus. Just because you have a vendetta against Manziel doesn't mean he isn't a polarizing topic that pretty much everyone is talking about in the sports world.

Oh, so we are playin' prison rules, eh?

I got my eye on you "the artist formerly known as cmstophe".

I'm just saying, you tell him people can post whatever they want, then do the same thing he did.

And it's not a vendetta, Manziel is going to fucking blow. It's so obvious, how the hell can Browns fans still not recognize a shitty QB?!

I'm telling him to let people post what they want. :chuckles: This is not a difficult concept nor a groundbreaking philosophy.

lol? :chuckles:

I'm sorry. I just did not see the necessity in gigantic bold letters post telling people to stop talking about one of the most popular quarterback prospects. As for Manziel, I think he's going to be good. Simply because you all are so convinced he will suck. Yep, that's my reasoning. I've made a living out of betting against the popular opinions on here. :) Won't stop now.
