The Jonas V thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Ricky Rubio was drafted 5th in 2009 and did not play for MIN until 2011 season.

Wiki:
"On June 25, 2009, he was drafted with the fifth pick in the first round of the 2009 NBA Draft by the Timberwolves,[4] making him the first player born in the 1990s to be drafted by the NBA. The Timberwolves had an agreement in principle with his former Spanish team, DKV Joventut, to buy out his contract, but Rubio backed out of the deal.[5] On August 31, 2009, Joventut traded the rights to Rubio to FC Barcelona,[6] and Rubio signed a six-year contract with FC Barcelona the following day.[7] On May 31, 2011, Rubio reached an agreement with Minnesota to join the Timberwolves for the 2011–12 NBA season.[8]"

Post 'Decision', no time for that b.s., especially with a player who chose Leon Rose/CAA as his agent.

After the draft[edit]
On July 22, the Associated Press reported that Rubio was seeking to leave Joventut, regardless of whether he was able to come to the NBA. The report indicated that ACB powers FC Barcelona and Real Madrid were both interested in signing Rubio if he could not immediately come to the NBA. The main stumbling block to Rubio's NBA move was a clause in the league's collective bargaining agreement that prohibited a team from paying more than $500,000 toward a player's contract buyout. Barça and Real, as ACB clubs, were not subject to this rule and could pay far more toward a buyout.[16] In another development, the St. Paul Pioneer Press reported on August 4 that Rubio's representatives had been actively seeking endorsement deals in Minnesota to help finance his buyout (the NBA buyout rules are binding on teams, but not on third parties).[17]

However, on August 31, 2009, ESPN reported that Rubio would not come to the NBA until 2011 at the earliest.[6] Joventut expressed a willingness to reduce the buyout, and the Timberwolves apparently had a deal to bring him to the NBA, but in the end Rubio did not feel ready to come across the Atlantic. Rubio issued the following statement:[5]

The reason leading me to take this next step is to have a period of preparation to better take the challenge of the NBA in better conditions as a player. The Minnesota Timberwolves continue to be my first option and I wish to play with them in the near future.
Kahn believed that Rubio and his family were being pressured by the Spanish media, his national teammates, and people in his hometown to stay in Spain, adding, "It's just been a tough summer. From an 18-year-old's perspective and his family's perspective, it was very nerve-racking."[5]

ESPN reported that his original buyout with Joventut was €5.7 million ($8.1 million) in both 2009 and 2010.[6] Barça bought out Rubio's contract for €3.5 million ($5.0 million), and announced on September 1 that he had signed a six-year deal with the club. The contract gave him the option to go to the NBA after the 2010–11 season,[18] with ESPN reporting that the buyout at that time would be a more manageable $1.4 million (of which the Timberwolves could pay $500,000).[5]

Rubio wanted to come to the NBA as soon as he can. It was just his contract was fucked up and both sides tried to get him to come over. Yeah, he signed a a 6 year contract and guess what, that contract allowed him to come over ASAP with a low friendly buyout.

There was an article that said CG didn't do enough scouting on JV and that he already fell in love with TT. He wanted to any excuse NOT to draft JV and the agent giving the runaround BS was just what the doctor ordered. What I'm saying is that agents and high draft picks are in no position to be demanding anything. If they do, it's only posturing.

I think it's exaggerated and unlikely to claim that Grant locked into TT and only TT. One article isn't going to change my mind. I think not getting the guy over for AT LEAST a year, maybe more given the agent BS, had a lot to do with the pick.

Say JV plays at Texas and TT is the highly touted international prospect. I think Grant picks the guy who he can get into the organization right away - JV.

Hell, with all the meddling Gilbert apparently does that's been kept under wraps, I wouldn't be at all surprised to find out that he wanted nothing to do with waiting on a guy. Shit, I'm sure Byron had some input as well. What coach doesn't want guys who can contribute from day 1?

I think it's silly to use hyperbole regarding Grant's feelings toward TT. There's no doubt he liked him a lot, but there were multiple reports linking the Cavs front office to JV all season long.

Chris Grant was reported to love Harrison Barnes as well. When he was available the following year, the Cavs passed.

There's way more that goes into this shit from an organizational standpoint than, "Well, Grant had already made up his mind months ago." I don't buy that.

If TT could defend stretch 4's, we would not be having this conversation. TT would be the better player. If you want to see a big reason why the Cavs only won 33 games, TT is a big part of that problem.

A center who can't defend centers.

We better grab our center. Young bigs are coming.

Chris Grant has totally fucked this team up

....yes, we would. he's still worthless offensively and good luck with him "anchoring" a defense from the 4.

it's nice when young high-upside players exhibit the drive and desire to reach their potential, so good for him.

not so nice when they are not on the cavs, however.

The 2011 draft makes zero sense. By that point, ownership was committed to rebuilding through the draft and accumulating the best assets regardless of the timetable. There was no mandate to win that season. Why then, would Scott/Grant/Gilbert care if they had to wait a year? All signs point to Grant having a fascination with TT...Despite all his smoke and mirrors about "the process," it seemed that Grant couldn't even live up to his messaging.

I have heard that TT is a Gilbert Pick.

This thread is depressing though...had we drafted Jonas, let him stay over in Lithuania another year, and tanked even harder, we could have won the next lottery. Imagine us with a front line of Davis and Valanciunas with Andy off the bench and Kyrie Irving at PG.

Or we could have drafted Valanciunas, which would have completely changed the team's course of events, utlimately leading to us, more likely than not, NOT winning the 2014 NBA lottery due to the butterfly effect, which means we don't get our superstar from this draft. We finally have a reason to be happy that we didn't draft Valanciunas!

Also, you do realize that, even if we had "tanked harder" the next season that we'd still only have a 25% chance of winning it, right?
