The Brian Hoyer thread...

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Is Brian Hoyer a top 10 QB in the NFL?

Not in QB rating, but overall.

Well, right now he's a spot ahead of Andrew Luck.

Wonder if Indy would throw in a 6th rounder along with Luck to get Hoyer back?

If many posters are playing the "just wait and see, his stats have to come back down to earth game," an argument can be made for "wait and see, he might end up a top 10 QB. It's a small sample size, you never know..."

I myself put Hoyer comfortably in the 11-20 tier, and he is starting to make me more comfortable to bump him up to 11-16. I would take Peyton, Brees, Brady, Luck, and Rogers in tier one. Stafford, Ryan, Wilson, Roethlisberger, and Rivers in tier 2. Nobody else who is actively playing has achieved enough in their careers to convince me they are better than Hoyer. Flacco and Eli may have rings, but they are damn lucky to have them.

You don't think Cam Newton, Tony Romo, or Jay Cutler are better than Brian Hoyer?

Cam hasn't won anything at the pro level and his ribs are teaching him the limitations of being a running QB. Romo has pretty much the same description for his career, aside from the publicized choking in the playoffs. Cutler fizzled out in Denver because his intangibles are dog shit. Some in Chicago thought McCown ran the Trestman system better.

I'm not picking the top ten fantasy quarterbacks. Other guys will play in systems that hoist it 70% of the time and I'd probably draft those guys on my fantasy team. I'm picking ten players I'd want running the Browns. Anyone else, if my co-workers ran up to me and said, "I can't believe it! Your Browns traded two draft picks for _________." I'd question the trade. That top ten are going to run an offense well, and have proven it.

The Panthers did win the NFC South last year, does the not winning anything argument still hold up for Newton? And Romo and Hoyer have not similar careers at all, Romo made the Pro Bowl at 26 and already made two more Pro Bowls at 29- the age Hoyer is getting his first extended look.

I'll agree to disagree about Jay Cutler, there's no point in trying to convince you to overlook his surly behavior and appreciate his underrated toughness or immense talent. I'll just say I don't know how anyone that's actually watched Cutler would put him below Hoyer as a QB, that's just silly. It has nothing to do with fantasy football, all three of these guys are just at another level of QB play.

First of all, b00bie asked for opinions on a subjective top 10. If you don't want to read my opinion, move along because its subjective. Second, I'm not ready to guy Newton as a pocket passer yet. With his rib injury, I think the way he plays the game and his own physical limits are forcing him to play differently this year. I compared Romo to Newton, not Hoyer. He has also been banged up for a few years and ownership is talking about drafting a QB to take over for him. I've never been overly impressed, and now he might be damaged goods.

Your opinions are subjective. Enjoy them. I said there is a third tier and I'm starting to believe Hoyer belongs in it somewhere... maybe not at the top of it, maybe not at the bottom of it. But I am open to him moving to the top of it if the Browns just made it through the toughest part of their schedule.

Philip Rivers is absolutely better than Hoyer. Romo is absolutely better than Hoyer.

Cutler's more talented but really hasn't done a whole hell of a lot with himself.

Most of the other teams are asking for way more from their quarterback position. The Browns are just asking for Hoyer to manage the game. It's the nice way of saying he's not as talented as other quarterbacks, but everyone knows Hoyer isn't the most talented of QBs. He's doing what he needs to do, and I'd take him over QBs like Romo/Cutler who are expected to do more, and end up committing turnovers in the process and hurting their team. Still, Hoyer has been presented with big play opportunities and hasn't connected on them (we can blame the WRs) but I think a QB like Cutler/Romo would also turn these plays into TDs. So basically, I think Hoyer is firmly in the middle of the pack and if you had a QB like Romo/Cutler, I don't think the Browns would be better off right now anyways. The QB would have to be elite.

For giggles and shits, what are your top 3 tiers of active QBs?

I got:
Tier 1 - Peyton, Brees, Brady, Luck, and Rogers in some order.

Tier 2 - Stafford, Ryan, Wilson, Roethlisberger, and Rivers in some order.

Tier 3 - Cutler, Romo, Dalton, and then I can rattle off five guys who are inconsistent... as you can see I don't think much of run-first QBs unless they have proven they can also go through progressions in the pocket. Kaepernick has been annoying me for three years.

Smoking Jay cutler tumble disagrees

I can do three but I'd rather do five.

Tier 1: Peyton, Brees, Brady, Rodgers
Tier 2: Ryan, Luck, Rivers, Stafford, Romo, Wilson
Tier 3: Roeth, Foles, Dalton, Cutler, Newton, Kaep, Cousins
Tier 4: Eli, Flacco, Alex Smith, Carson Palmer
Tier 5: QB carousel types like Cassel, Tannehill, Henne, Fitzpatrick, etc.

Luck will be Tier 1 by the end of the year. Brady may move down to tier 2 by season's end and Foles may replace him. Cousins looks like a potential tier 2 guy, but it's early. RG3's potential at this point is as a Tier 2 guy, but realistically he's probably a Tier 3 IF he stays healthy.

To get back to the point...Hoyer is probably a Tier 4 guy. He fits right in with Eli, Smith and Flacco as far as I'm concerned.

Whether you're sold on Newton as a passer or not, he's most certainly better than Hoyer.

As is Romo.

Fun fact that could win you a bar bet: Nick Foles transferred to Arizona because he couldn't beat out...

Brian Hoyer at Michigan State. Now Foles plays for Chip the Ripper and his breakneck offense and everyone loves him.

Romo could be argued, yes. But he is a turnover machine and Hoyer has done well in that regard.
