Addressing the hole at center

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I like Tarik Black. He played productive minutes while Dwight was out. Not a solution, but he could back up Tristan. He is pretty tough around the basket.

I was just coming in here to mention Tarik Black. He could back up Tristan and send Marion back to the bench.

Cheap solution for right now. Make it happen.

Tarik Black waived by the Rockets. Hopefully the cavs will claim him.

How big is he? He's listed at 6'11 but Draft Express has him at 6'8 1/2 from a Clippers workout. I haven't watched him at all.

I don't know cause I haven't measured him, but he is at least 6'9, and he is really strong. He isn't a great basketball player, but is good getting 50/50 balls and can finish around the basket. I don't his stats tell you much about him. I don't believe he is a rebounding liability because he had good hands and gets after it.

If he is really 6'11 I would say grab him because he may have upside as a defensive center. I haven't checked his age, I have just been watching a lot of Rockets. He was Dmo s back up when Dwight was out. He was often in for defense at the end of games with Dmo at center so he can play 4\5.

An improvement over Amundsen for sure.

Seems everywhere I check he's listed at 6'11..which probably means he's 6'10..

Why isn't Blatt at least trying Haywood?

Maybe it's because he plays like he's got cinder blocks stuffed in his Nikes? Or maybe it's just because he was a bad match up against Miami (because his shoes are full of concrete) ?

I think the Cavs will give him some burn in the next couple weeks to see if a little more playing time is all he needs to get those stone feet to tap dance.

The Cavs aren't inclined to make an immediate move to shore up their front court, however, according to a league source. There's a variety of reasons behind the thinking. For starters, the Cavs do not have much interest in the veteran big men that are currently free agents in Jermaine O'Neal, Kenyon Martin and Emeka Okafor. Beyond that, the team believes that in the short term, it can give more minutes to Thompson and get a real look at Brendan Haywood, the veteran center that's spent much of the season collecting DNPs on the bench.

Also, Cleveland could try to play small in the interim. Cavs general manager David Griffin's background is with the "seven seconds or less" Phoenix Suns, a team that played the likes ofBoris Diaw and Tim Thomas in the front court to try to spread the floor.

"We will approach it initially on a game-to-game basis, maybe more matchup-oriented," Blatt said. "We'll look down the line to see what we can do on a more permanent basis and guys will step up."

Behind Love, the Cavs started Shawn Marion in the front court to match up with Miami, who start with a stretch 4 in Shawne Williams.

Our front court issues aren't going to be solved by 1 player. Can we try to claim him off of waivers since he is a league minimum player?

Yes, any team can claim a waived player on a minimum salary. If more than one team tries to claim a player on waivers, the team with the worst record gets him.

I assume the Cavs would need to drop a player of their own to make roster space, unless they've received a disabled player exception for Varejao.

I think we may be right in the theory that we may NOT actually need someone else.

Look at our numbers with TT vs. Varejao. Night and day.

With Tristan and the rest of the starters, the offensive and defensive ratings are: 124.1/87.8

With Varejao and the starters, the offensive and defensive ratings are: 103.6/104.5

That is a +36 difference with Tristan and a -1 difference with Varejao. (Note that the Tristan lineup has played 79 minutes together and the Varejao lineup has played 215.)

Tarik Black has 2 blocks on the season in 25 games played.

Surprising. He is an active defender, but 2 blocks ain't great. He does contest, but like I said he would be better than Amundsen.

tarik black isn't any kind of "solution." he isn't the rim-protecting big the cavs desperately need, he doesn't address the woefully-limited lack of playoff experience up front, and the cavs are unlikely to get him anyways because teams worse than them will claim him too.

it's almost january; the trade deadline really is not that far away. the cavs need more than a solution "for right now." they need a guy that can actually fill needs going forward.

The Memphis pick and Waiters are probably the Cavs 2 most valuable trade assets and I'm not giving up either unless it's for a long term solution at C. Because of what was needed to be done to be able to bring in LeBron and Love the Cavs don't have a ton of assets left. You don't give them up for a short term stopgap.
I believe the Cavs are a year away from being legit championship contenders. They still need 2 more pieces. They can and I believe will reach their goal but need to be careful to not make any panic moves with short term thinking.

The legacy of Chris Grant is still hurting this franchise. Holes would already be filled and needs addressed on the roster if he didn't draft poorly and evaluate talent so badly. He was great at trades but too bad someone else didn't run the drafts.

They need a player with length and agility, with the ability to make a significant impact. Picking up third stringers who lack a few of these traits is less useful than playing Haywood, who still has the length and physicality to cover some of these needs.

Negotiate a trade for one of those guys who deserve 30+ minutes a night or no move at all.

wait, what? i understand not wanting random unproven fifth and sixth bigs, but this kind of player is just not feasible given the cavs assets (unless you think guys like wright and mozgov are being criminally underplayed on their respective teams, in which case nevermind).
