Matthew Dellavedova

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I could see us drafting a PG and sticking him in the D league for a while. This would let us keep developing and showcasing Delly (which should increase his trade value, and give him a chance to prove he's worth the backup role).

However, I think another backup center may be more important. Perkins is done after this year, and there's no telling if AV will ever make it to another post-season. I would rather have a solid 4 big man rotation than a 4th PG (yes, I consider LBJ to be one of our PGs)
Backup rim-protecting center would be huge because we can't count on Mozgov always being healthy and even when healthy he doesn't typically log huge minutes. The Cavs saw how the team transformed once Mozgov showed up, so hopefully we can find some sort of "mini Mozgov" out there somewhere.

Work ethic, leadership and basketball IQ. Probably should be getting paid as an assistant coach. Not to mention he seems to be present at nearly every charity day at which the Cavs send players.

In the first two playoff games Delly has not missed a shot or turned the ball over. He has a positive Net +/- over his 18 minutes even though Boston is not a great match-up for him. But still some fans are screaming for the lowest paid Cav to be axed. But Dellys low contract provides huge value by allowing us to pay bigger $ to others in the roster. He also provides huge value to the team on and off the court but I guess some people are never happy and have to find something to whinge about. Good grief......
Boy did you jinx him...

Pretty clear that the problem was big man depth and Smith's ejection leaving the Cavs short-handed... and they still won.

Drop in eFG% for opposing PGs and SGs is crazy. Guy deserves more credit for his defense than he gets, especially when you take into consideration his pay grade. Also, thank god Mike Brown is gone so we never have to see him guard SFs again, even though he fared pretty well against them his 1st year in the league.

He definitely adjusted his game to the speed of the NBA better this year. I think having Mozgov helped a ton, as well. Having that big to steer guys into always helps.

I'm a Delly fan, but I think what you are seeing with OPP-PER has a lot more to do with the changes to the other 4 players in Cavs uniforms than it does Delly.

Also, Waiters was the guard who was often guarding SF's last season. 82 games algorithm for deciding who was guarding who doesn't understand what was actually going on and decided that Delly must be guarding SF's in the 3 guard sets because his head is 1/4" higher than Dion's head. If Delly could hold opposing SF's to a PER < 10, then by all means, play him there.

He Delly does a couple things well on defense, but overall, he's a liability, especially in an iso situation.

Defensive metrics are far less abundant than offensive ones, but parsing through what's available tells the story of an average to below-average defender, at best. For one thing, Cleveland's defense has been much, much better since January 15th... except when Dellavedova is on the floor. The Cavs are more than 5 points better per 100 possessions when he is sitting on the bench. In other words, when Delly is out there, the team reverts to pre-hot-streak-level defense.

His Defensive Real Plus Minus also ranks him 409th out of 496 available players (as of March 1st). I don't have a PhD in statistics, so I can't explain how that metric precisely works, but what it endeavors to do is describe a player's defensive impact "by adjusting for the effects of each teammate, opposing player and coach." Single-number metrics are worthy of healthy skepticism, and must be used in an appropriate manner (i.e. to support an argument, not be the foundation for one, which leads to all kinds of problems), but Delly's -1.79 number ranks him 81st of 104 shooting guards (the position he's listed) and would be 59th of 92 point guards.

Synergy Sports has a few positive things to say about his defensive efforts that deserve mention here. He's a good pick and roll defender (70th percentile), allowing just 0.708 points per possession when he's guarding the ball handler. The Cavaliers as a whole struggle with closing out on spot-up shooters, but this is one area where Dellavedova excels, as he ranks in the 82nd percentile (0.842 PPP) at doing so. The team also struggles to hustle back in transition, but even Delly's harshest critic has to admit such a thing would never be a problem for him individually.

He is also excellent at not allowing clear path fouls. He consistently gets in front of the offensive player and either try's to take a charge or take a blocking foul and stop the fast break.

Yep. While I wouldn't say his court vision is anything truly special, I'd say his court awareness and decision making is great.

Let me get this straight...the preceding 4 posts have praised Delly's ability to foul in the open court? That's like saying the fat chick has a nice personality.

It's a good foul. It stops an easy fast break basket…

Yep good personality is underrated. Delly had the best +- on the team tonight too.

Delly also had a nice hip check on rose. He was pretty solid while out there on both sides.
