Blatt said the guy was good pick & roll defender, which was his strongest quality. can move laterally and has size but very very raw around the basket.

He struggled to compare how raw he was offensively. I supplied "Bismack Biymobo" and got "that's about right." He's at best a cheap rotation big nothing more

Still sounds like a guy with more basketball ability than Perkins. Hopefully he becomes nothing more than an insurance policy that you can actually collect a bit on instead of a walking flagrant foul used to hurt people.

I wonder if we could sign him at the Vet Minimum level or if he would require the full taxpayer MLE?

I'd like to us to take a stab at whether personal connections and the lure of a championship could convince Kevin Serpahin(ripped by Rich Paul) or Koufus(from NE Ohio and ripped by Klutch Sports Agent and Cleveland Mark Termini)

Then again, if the Spurs would truly dump Splitter for the Haywood contract(to create the room for Aldridge or Gasol), then Koufus and Seraphin would be unnecessary(so would Kaun at that point)

A lot of this will really come down to how high Gilbert authorizes the payroll and subsequent Luxury Tax obligation to go.

What about his scowling ability? Perk was a first team NBA frowner last season and perhaps an all time NBA great at menacing scowls.

I just had a chuckle thinking about how Kendrick Perkins would have reacted to Dion Waiters over time in the locker room. I mean, long term it might have been good for Dion, but short term, can't help but think everytime Dion went rogue or started to piss of LeBron on the court and practice court, Perkins would be the enforcer of the All In mentality.

What a completely different locker room in general from last year to this year.

Oh yeah, and , Sasha Kaun(to stay on topic)

Why would he leave money on the table, signing for less to be an NBA backup? I think the Cavs have to at least come close to what he would get in Europe. He isn't a star so every dollar counts.

Send Kaun's rights with Haywood to the Spurs for Splitter.

Problem solved.

I'd probably rather have Jordon than Splitter.

Or really, any center who isn't charmin soft.

I'm no cap expert, but it seems to me that the tax isn't going to be a big deal for Gilbert in the next couple of years because the cap is going to jump upwards anyway, so the danger of going into repeater tax is almost nonexistent, and Gilbert is a willing spender anyway.

The problem isn't how much Gilbert is willing to spend, it's how we can go about actually adding salary. It's not straight-forward, and we are restricted in how we can improve the team being so far over the cap.

Eh...if we're going to have a guy who barely plays and isn't skilled, I'd rather just keep Perkins for the locker room benefits.

I'm aware of that. I was mostly responding to MirORich's concerns about going too deep into tax territory.

(Gour, going to use your post as a jumping off point, not really responding to it directly)

This is why using the Haywood deal(and not just releasing him) is so key.

We're pretty stacked already when healthy, but you always want to continue to add present day help or future assets/flexibility. Without it, we have just the taxpayer MLE, the #24 pick in this draft, and the vet minimum to add players to next years team without trading out players already here making a contribution.

But with the Haywood contract, we can add one guy like Splitter, Ilyasova, Iguadola(all just examples based on their salary) on a 8-10 million per year contract. We can add two guys making a combined $10 million
We can add a guy who we don't plan on using, but for taking his bad contract we possibly get a future draft pick thrown in.

Even if we take on a contract of a guy we don't love, it still increases and prolongs our ability to eventually trade for a salary that we wouldn't be permitted to sign via FA.

Interested to see what they do with it.

Regarding our cap situation...Going forward, I'd argue the team we already have assembled is set to contend for titles for years to come. With the exception of LeBron, all our key guys are either in or haven't reached their primes yet, which makes the point that paying these guys won't be an issue. It's when you have guys around age 30/31 looking for 5 year contracts where things get iffy, but we don't have that problem. LBJ would be an exception anyways but this core is ready to go for years to come. As others have said, the Haywood contract can add another key piece and we also have our 1st round pick this year that we can develop.

It's quite a great situation we have, there is no reason that next year we can't have a roster as deep or talented as GS. We already have pieces 1-7 lined up (assuming Love comes back). We can use our assets to cash in on filling out the roster.
