(No Longer) Joe Woods’ Defense

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Myles getting a running start in the gap lol.

Best of luck kids.

I watched that play live and was thinking Myles is gonna jump offsides. Why Wentz would call "hike" like that just solidifies he ain't it anymore. Thats about the dumbest thing you can do in that spot. He waits another half second and Myles either jumps or is back on his heels.

Nothing. Our pass protection was just better in the second half.

Also, maybe I'm crazy but we ran the exact same play for Harrison Bryant in the first half and the first drive of the second half.

I don't think KS had two different game plans or called a different game in the second half. The O-Line was just better at executing and it allowed DW4 to be himself.
Yeah, because anything that doesn't work is always 100% on the players and the coach never, ever, has a thing to do with anything that doesn't work. Tell me that isn't your stance every single time it comes up.

All I know is, the difference between the 2 halves was this... 2nd half the ball came out faster (> 4 seconds damn near every time), routes came open earlier. The OLine simply didn't have to hold their blocks for as long as they did in the first half. Watson was masterful at standing and delivering on time, and bailing at the right times. We kept running even when it didn't work forcing the defense to respect it, and we ran play actions with success. That helped slow their rush. Maybe losing one of their starting DL helped. And we ran a few read options that worked. We ran drag routes that cleared out the right side with Coop and DPJ coming across a wide open middle of the field. Even on the deep out pattern to Cooper the ball came out early.

First half Watson held the ball longer, for whatever reason. He had deeper slower drops. He did have Njoku open in the end zone but the left side of the pass protection blew up immediately on that play, forcing Watson to immediately bail to the right, and he missed Njoku for that reason. The run worked better than the pass in the first half. Then we went away from it. The pass worked much better than the run in the second half.

Myles first sack ever on his first play ever was him lined up at DT, why the hell have coaches not moved him inside more I will never know.

That sack/rush pressure is always going to be there for Garrett when the opposing team has an empty backfield and he's lined up inside like that. A guard or center is not prepared to handle an edge rusher, much less so a Garrett caliber one. I would like to see them run that like fifteen times against the Steelers. Give Pickett a welcome to the rivalry.

A browns reporter suggested bringing woods back, but hiring a former coach to be an assistant head coach, and advisor to the defense, at that point if you need all that why even bother? Just hire someone else. I wouldn't care if they bring woods back or fire him.

I agree that bringing back Woods would be a travesty.

His biggest deficiencies don't get fixed by having another advisor in the building. His problem is execution and calling plays.

The reporter, surprise surprise, is just dumb.

Not 100%, no.

But the percentages of plays - particularly offensively - that don't work because of a poor player execution is a lot higher than you seem to think it is.

And i know this is a Browns forum and they're the only team we care about in this context, but bad execution being a bigger problem than bad scheme offensively really applies across the entire NFL because of the simple fact defense is reactionary to offense.

The best hope for a defense on most plays is someone not executing their assignment offensively. Obviously defenses can make this more difficult by having talented players and trying to continuously attack weaker offensive players (typically blockers).

I'm talking about in the mind of Los with that statement. Not in reality, not even in the mind of any other poster here..

For what it's worth, there's growing chatter about Woods being kept on.

It's the end of the season. People begin to think through all the grandstanding when it becomes real.

I still think he ends up parting with the franchise. I do wonder if they will offer him a deal. They could talk about offering "Senior Defensive Assistant" to somebody he approves, who would have some of his responsibilities. A front seven specialist like Schwartz paired with Woods would be better than many people realize.

Woods will likely land as either a passing game coordinator or a DC in his next stop, he has a lot of supporters in powerful positions in the NFL.

Can we get a breakdown on the improved defensive numbers? The eye test says that they are definitely playing better.
