Too many on this board are short sighted about building a championship team. With someone like Drummond you spend a couple years developing them, and then reap the rewards like Orlando did once Howard established himself as a dominator in the paint.
If he is on the board you take him regardless of who else is left. We can find an undersized shooting guard anytime (MKG I could deal with though), but to find a big with Dwight Howard type athleticism who is still only 18 is the type of things that come back and haunt franchises when they are aonly a piece away and it happens to be a center.
We have been through that before trotting out washed up veterans (Z/Wallace/Shaq) when we were on the verge of a title. I am surprised to see that experience (and how hard a position it is to fill) didn't seem to change the minds of many around here who seem disinterested in a legit, young, high ceiling center we could groom (JV last year we also passed on).
Like others have said, if it were just a matter of wait a couple years and you have the next Dwight Howard, Drummond would be taken 1st/2nd. We have no idea if he will ever put it together on the court. And considering how easy it is to get 2-guards in this league, I'm surprised we've only come up with Anthony Parker, Larry Hughes, and Christian Eyenga. I suppose Dwest filled the role well during his short stay.
