2012 Draft

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
He gets all this hate because he was "supposed" to be a Kobe type player coming into college, at least that was what people's expectations were. So people are expecting someone who can dominate games attacking the basket and what they get is a guy who is a jump shooter. As as been stated many times, he is not a good ball handler and not particularly crafty with the ball. He's more Steve Smith/Luol Deng, those types of players aren't as exciting I guess...but both are 18-20 ppg type playes. That's probably just about the type of player Barnes would project to be.

He's also extremely stiff in all of his movements and his lack of athleticism forces him into low percentage shots. I expect him to be an 18-20 ppg scorer in his prime on low efficiency (40-42% from the field).

The hate is justified.

The Cavaliers may be hoping to draft the Kentucky freshman Kidd-Gilchrist, but it’s unlikely the Wizards let that happen. The youngest prospect in the draft has an outstanding work-ethic and would make an excellent long-term addition at the wing for the Cavaliers.

O.k...

If the Cavaliers draft based on immediate need, they need look no further than Florida shooting guard Bradley Beal. Beal was one of the top prospects coming into college and while his freshmen season was not overwhelming, he has a noted high basketball IQ, strong shooting mechanics, an improving handle and outstanding block and steal numbers for a guard. The 18-year-old has everything the Cavaliers need to fill their gaping hole at the two spot.

Again..o.k..don't have a issue with Beal...

Barnes will be a very good NBA player and would be a great complement to Irving at the offensive end. The 20-year-old North Carolina sophomore wing is likely more NBA ready, but he may not have the same upside as his 18-year-old competitors. If the Cavaliers retain both Alonzo Gee and Omri Casspi, the team can wait until next season to address the small forward spot.

Anyone want what he's smokin'? Gee might not even be here and even if he is..he's a bench player.. Casspi , more like Casper the friendly ghost..dude is weak and has a weak game..again ,another bench player.
But I think we all kinda knew that, although I would say he's the classic case of being traded for and just not being able to do much .
The Cavs need a scoring SF in the worst way.

I think what the author meant in reference to Gee/Casspi is that, while obviously that wouldn't be a great situation for a team that was ready to contend for something, it can do for another season at this stage of the rebuild. I mean, unlike the shooting guard position, we have guys on the roster at the 3. As it stands right now, I don't even know who the hell is going to be playing the 2 spot for the Cavs next year.

Ideally, Gee is a rotation type of player on a good team. Unfortunately, we haven't had quite enough time to build a good team yet.

If it's a smokescreen it's probably us telling charlotte that if they pick MKG to try to get picks from us in a trade we will just tell them to go fuck themselves and take Barnes.

Edit: And I don't mean it's a traditional smokescreen in that we don't even want Barnes. I think our big board goes:
1. Davis
2. MKG
3. Barnes

We would be happy with Barnes and since there is a 99.9% chance he is there at 4 it is beneficial for us to leak that info out so nobody ahead of us picks MKG just to extort assets from us.

I like what you wrote, a very interesting possibility.

Or how about, you are a member of the Cavs organization, or a huge fan (kudos!) attempting to rate Barnes near an MKG level in this forum, or at least projecting the image that the Cavs feel this way, not so that the Bobcats won't try to trade with us (how hard is it to pick up the phone?), but so they will value Barnes a little bit higher, thinking what they first loved in Barnes is still there and not tainted by his college career? Take him, thus dropping MKG another spot closer to us..

Let the mind games continue!!

Okay maybe it's not that deep and the Cavs just like Barnes. But I probably won't be putting too much stock in any "leaks" of information up until close to the time Stern calls the #4 pick's name. Will be fun to see what comes out over the next few weeks though.

The Cavs do like Barnes, and so does Kyrie. Wouldn't shock me at all if he's taken at #4 if Davis/MKG/Beal go 1,2,3.

First, I don't think how close Kyrie and Barnes are should factor into the choice at all. I'm quite sure Kyrie can make friends with whomever we select at 4 and 24.

That said, it wouldn't surprise me, either, if we ended up picking Barnes. It would disappoint me, though... I'd be incredibly disappointed.

Davis, Beal, Drummond, Waiters and Barnes are opting out of the skills portion of the combine...

Actually, i wouldn't be surprised if the Cavs pick Barnes with Beal still on the board.

I'm not a Barnes hater by any means, I think he'd be great, but Beal seems like the better overall player with his handle, rebounding ability, secondary ball handling ability etc. I'll be pissed if we take Barnes over Beal.

I'd still roll with Drummond over Barnes as well. His ability to be our 'hub' would be greatly welcomed by me.

Anyone have an idea when official measurements are supposed to come out? That's all I care about with the combine.

I rate Beal over Barnes too, but i'm inclined to think that the Cavs top 3 is Davis, MKG and Barnes. But it is just a feeling, i can be totally wrong. Like i said in another post, if we pick Barnes we'll have to manage our expectations because we'll get a very good contributor, but probably not our second star. It's a step forward on the rebuild, though not a great one.

I agree, although my order of preference for a SG would be Lamb, Waiters, Ross. Couple that with Drummond= home run.

However, I can envision the Cavaliers trying to put a more offensive-minded center, like Tyler Zeller, next to Tristan Thompson.

I agree.

This kind of sucks because I am zeroed in on MKG. All of these rumors that MKG could be there at 4 has really gotten my hopes up. The Cavs aren't going to land him, and I am going to be depressed, even though I shouldn't be.

Barnes is so predictable, I think I could guard him. Honestly, all he's got is catch the ball, pump fake, jab step (with right foot), go left, pull up.

 Overexaggerate much?
