2013 NFL Free Agency: Browns

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I have to admit, I don't know much about Grimes. I know he's an above average player. I know ESPN rates him very highly (for what that's worth) but beyond that I don't really have an educated opinion. After looking into him and reading this below, I will agree with Grossi on his skepticism. At least because of the injury not because he's 30. Having older players isn't a bad thing as long as you pay them accordingly. Paying 30+ year olds like they were 25 is where I have a problem. Also, 30 year old guys aren't old, 33 and above I consider getting too old.

Bottom line, Grimes is a 5'10 cornerback who relied on technique and speed to be a pro bowl level CB. An Achilles injury is pretty devastating physically to a guy like him who doesn't have the size to compensate. He's a major risk and one that should be paid as one instead of a pro bowl level player.

Pro Football Focus also has Grimes rated highly; he's listed as the No. 1 CB in free agency.

Summary: While the 2012 free agent cornerback class may not have any star names, it more than makes up for that with depth. This was an extremely tough list to pare down to just 10 names, with another half a dozen that could still help teams in need of an upgrade in the secondary. The group is led by Brent Grimes, a player that was on the cusp of becoming one of the league’s best cover corners before an Achilles injury put pay to his 2012 season just 52 snaps into it.

Grimes shows a fantastic instinct for zone coverage and reminds me a little of Asante Samuel without the lapses and questionable desire for contact. He has fantastic fundamentals, quick reactions and a pretty good set of ball skills when the ball is in the air. Along with everybody else on this list, however, he comes with some risk attached. He will be 30 years old by the time he next sees the field, and is coming off a season-ending injury.

In the 2011 season he got his hands to 13 passes while allowing just 25 to be completed all year, and QBs had a rating of only 62.9 when targeting him, but this offseason he might have to accept a short-term ‘prove it’ contract to see a more healthy return a year from now.

With the 'attach' style defense the Browns are going to run, our CBs better be at least solid in man coverage because they are going to be left on an island. Zone guys like Grimes are great, but can he effective be put in man to man play after play?

It's simply lying. When they turn that age, then use it. Not before. Like I said, it is a falsehood. You are also one of the people around here that is guilty of it. I've also seen people claim certain players around here were two years older then they are.

It's lying to say that players age over time?

It's not, really. It's his age 30 season we're talking about, were speaking in the future tense.

To bad we couldn't make a run at Sam shields. Would of loved to been able to land him and draft a corner in the third round. Damn these RFA tenders.

When you say he's 30 it makes one wonder if he'll turn 31 when the season rolls around.

Bet you don't do that with every player, do you? How about someone that is 18 or 22? If you don't do it with every single player in any sport, then it is being done for the exact reason I stated, to try to make the player seem older then he is.

No, it's lying to imply a player is older then he is at the time of writing. No one goes around and tries to round up a players age when he is younger. Only when he is perceived as older. No one goes around calling a 21 year old a 22 year old. No reason to refer to a 28 or 29 year old as 30.

Does Grossi have any sources at this point? We know about his feud with Lombardi, so it's unlikely he's even talking to anyone high up in our front office. At this point he's just being a troll; I'll be the first to admit I'm not a fan at all of Lombardi, but I don't think any of the signings so far have been particularly egregious.

His source is his left hand..

I wouldn't risk signing the thirty year old Grimes to a big contract. Short deal I'd be ok with.

I think we should talk about his age for at least a couple more pages.

I don't see how his age is an issue.. If anything it's that fact he's coming off a tough injury.

Not concerned that he's 29 years old. Only concerned about his health.

Because pro athletes tend to fall off after age 30. Paying guys on the downside of their career is a legit concern.

And it sill isn't lying to say he'll be 30 when he turns 30.

And we do it with younger players as well. We have often talked about Kyrie when he enters his prime years. Since he isn't in his prime now, we all must be liars.

I think it really depends on what the deal is. If it's only a three year deal and it isn't for huge money, I don't see the problem with it. I certainly wouldn't give the guy a five year deal unless not much of it was guaranteed, but three years is pretty reasonable. The injury is obviously a concern, but that's why our team has a medical staff, right? If they clear him, they clear him.
