2013 NFL Free Agency: Browns

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Because pro athletes tend to fall off after age 30. Paying guys on the downside of their career is a legit concern.

And it sill isn't lying to say he'll be 30 when he turns 30.

And we do it with younger players as well. We have often talked about Kyrie when he enters his prime years. Since he isn't in his prime now, we all must be liars.

You guys are talking about two different things. No ones denying the fact that Grimes will be 30 in July. Scholar is saying it's lying or disingenuous to say that Grimes is 30, as in he's 30 years old right now. No one has a problem with someone saying he'll be 30 because that's future tense, not present like some people keep using.

Weeden was a victim of this around draft time last year. He was 30 before he ever put on a Browns uniform according to some people.

I think it really depends on what the deal is. If it's only a three year deal and it isn't for huge money, I don't see the problem with it. I certainly wouldn't give the guy a five year deal unless not much of it was guaranteed, but three years is pretty reasonable. The injury is obviously a concern, but that's why our team has a medical staff, right? If they clear him, they clear him.

Certainly depends on what type of deal, how his physical went, etc. I just am shocked someone feels that rounding up is lying

It's not disingenuous. It's the truth. How old a player is matters, especially when they hit 30 or more.

I didn't say the age of a player doesn't matter.

Grimes is 29 years old right now. The statement "Grimes is 30 years old" is false. The statement "Grimes will be 30 years old in July" is true. I just don't get how you can't see the difference between someone saying "Grimes is 30" and someone saying "Grimes will be 30" because there's a clear cut difference between the two. One is true and one is false.

And yes Jigo, this is incredibly stupid.

The argument started when it was mentioned that those who say, "He'll be 30 when he suits up" were liars. I don't like being called a liar, especially when I am not lying.

Record-breakingly stupid argument.

After some of the absolute nonsense you and others argue over in Eayor? Pot kettle black. My friend, pot kettle black.

Anyways, I never intended this to be more then a post or two. Sorry for derailing the thread somewhat. It is just a pet peeve I have had, particularly after the crap with Weeden last year. Too many people use present tense for something that only occurs in a future tense. Grossi was definitely doing that.

One other trouble with thinking in this manner is when the players' birthdays occur during the season. One month in, half way through, one month left, last day of the regular season, during the playoffs, on Super Bowl Sunday all very different. I bet some of you including Grossi would refer to a 29 year old as 30 even if he turned 30 on Super Bowl Sunday if it was supportive of your argument.

Anyways, enough of that. The key to Grimes is how well he has recovered from that injury. If he checks out medically, a three year deal at reasonable money would be fine. That would give us time to try to groom a replacement. Look for some CB's to develop while Grimes holds down the CB position.

This is annoying, I'm come in this thread every so often to check for any updates and this age debate has been going on for 3-4 pages now. But anyways from what we know it seems like our visit went well, but does anyone know if he is gonna be visiting anymore teams today??

Don't get defensive and bring OTEAYOR into it. Just own the fact that this was a moronic argument (as you sort of did) and move on (which you didn't.) Besides, there's a lot more at stake when it comes to debating age in OTEAYOR and there's usually pictures involved. At least until Mar was banned.

And don't call me friend, buddy.

I think we should round up to 50 since he's closer to 50 than to 0. :chuckles:

Browns need to sign someone new so this thread can get back on track. I think the key age-related points have been covered...

Bucs, Dolphins, Browns, and the Falcons have been linked to Grimes recently.

EDIT to add:

Free agent cornerback Brent Grimes enjoyed visit with Cleveland Browns

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Free agent cornerback Brent Grimes enjoyed his visit with the Cleveland Browns and is expected to start narrowing his choices in the next few days, a league source said.

Grimes, 29, tore his Achilles tendon in Atlanta's opener last season and spent the year on injured reserve. The Falcons, who hope to re-sign him, paid him $10.2 million in 2012 after designating him as a franchise player.

While in Berea, Grimes visited with defensive coordinator Ray Horton and coach Rob Chudzinski, among others. Grimes was in Miami on Friday to talk to the Dolphins.

"Brent enjoyed spending time with the head coach and defensive coordinator," the source said. "He came away impressed with their overall plan for the 2013 season and beyond."

Atlanta coach Mike Smith said at last month's Scouting Combine in Indianapolis that Grimes' recovery was "progressing very well."

But did he have any pre-draft workouts?
