Have we moved on from Ray Allen, at this point?

Re: 2014 Free Agency Period: News and Discussion (Marion watch)

Information about George's injured player exception:

http://www.sbnation.com/nba/2014/8/4/5966737/pacers-disabled-player-exception-paul-george-injury

By rule, teams can replace a disabled player by being given a salary that is 50 percent of the injured player's salary or the non-taxpayer mid-level exception, whichever is less. George's five-year contract kicks in this year at $15.9 million, meaning the Pacers will be given the latter.

Pending a league physical on George to confirm he will be out for the season, the Pacers will have the mid-level exception value of $5.305 million to spend on one free agent -- or a player claimed off waivers -- for one season. That, or Indiana can make a trade and acquire a player whose salary is the mid-level exception plus $100,000. In a trade, the incoming player would also have to be in the final year of his contract.

The odd and seemingly unnecessary quirk in the disabled player exception is that any player added on the rule is added to the team's total on top of George's salary. The problem in signing a player without shipping away salary is that Indiana, with total salaries at $74.8 million, is already well over the salary cap and about $2 million away from the luxury tax threshold of $76.8 million, according to ShamSports.

Indiana could use the full $5.305 million but would then be paying taxes.

Jones and Miller were expected signings. I don't think the Cavs have closed the door on Allen. They can always add Allen at a vet-min contract at any point. Some have speculated it might not happen until the season is underway.

Cavs can have up to 20 players on the roster over the summer but have to cut down to 15 before the season starts.

No. He is an option. Our roster stands at 16.

Powell is unsigned still as far as I know.

The 3 Jazz guys are not guaranteed.

So that basically brings us down to 12 if we need it.

Wiggins and Bennett are likely gone.

If we only add Love, that brings us to 11 guaranteed deals. I think we add another player besides Love though giving us 12.

So we have 3-4 slots open right now if we want them.

But I'd say the Cavs big board right now is something like:

Marion
Center
Non-Marion defensive wing
Allen

Also Marion's ties with Griffin may come into play more than any ties Marion has with LeBron

Re: 2014 Free Agency Period: News and Discussion (Marion watch)

Nice...so if Indy signs Marion, they will be over the luxury tax in a year they're not even going to seriously contend for a championship. Although I don't see it as a big issue as long as they don't plan on staying over the tax 3 of the next 4 years.

It's still not the smartest move to make as a front office though. They really should be tanking.

Losing Stephenson and not replacing him with a playmaking guard already dropped them to the bottom half of the playoff picture. Losing George and replacing him with Marion, they probably win 30 games.

We can offer him about 1.4 million for this year and a longer deal (?), while the Pacers can offer him the whole 5 mil disabled player exception on a 1 year deal. It's not a large difference, it'll come down to what he values more at this stage of his career.

I know he wants to play on but I think they offered him an assistant job to go alongside lue.

Re: 2014 Free Agency Period: News and Discussion (Marion watch)

I just realized both Murphy & Powell have the size to play Center if need be. However, I dont see how we dont add a real backup center.
