2014 Free Agency Period: News and Discussion

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I really hope we don't sign T-Mac if he comes back

Agreed. While I enjoyed watching T-Mac just to see if he can turn back the clock for one game and play like he did with the Rockets against the Spurs, he seems like such a waste on a bench now. I can't see any competitor wasting a roster spot on him now, and if he finds himself in a similar situation he was in with the Pistons I imagine he'll re-retire after a couple weeks. The dude should play internationally if he still wants to ball.

I doubt we go for guys like Sanders and McGee unless we get real desperate next season.
They superficially look like good addon's because they fill our need for a "rim protector" but when you take a look at their numbers adjusted +/- and RAPM you see both are just not smart basketball players. They hurt the offense and the amount they help on defense is a lot less then what you expect from guys who should be able to completely alter a ton of shots (i.e. Sanders)

I suspect we'll key in a guy like Okafur if he can play who is a lot cheaper, shorter contract and smarter so has a more positive impact on the game despite the lack of highlight real plays.

Given who Sanders has been playing with in Milwaukee, it might be a bit unfair to say he hurts the offense. He hasn't exactly been playing with guys who have offensive firepower. He's not a major offensive threat, but we don't need that. He can dunk, block shots, and he plays a lot smarter than McGee does. He's also quick enough to cover guards when he switches on the pick-and-roll. If he can get his head on straight, he's basically the prototypical center we'd want for this roster.

I don't think that Dan Gilbert is going to want to take many personality risks after being burned badly by Bynum, and to take it back a little further, Delonte West. Unless Sanders shows a significant improvement in the maturity department, I don't see us targeting him.

Windy mention Koufos awhile ago as someone we should target, and I like that to be honest. He wouldn't cost much I'd think.

He'd be a better option than Haywood for sure. The Cavs really need to address this issue. They don't have to go for a starting center by any means right now, but they definitely need another quality 7 ft guy on the team. They have zero right now, because I really don't think Haywood can give you quality minutes at this juncture. He's a foul-man, nothing more.

I don't want to start the season with Andy being the only ideal guy to play quality minutes at the 5. That's a real fail on Griffin if that's the case.

I know there's a lot of praise going on for Griffin, but we still have no clue what kind of GM he is. LB coming back, Love being traded, are the cards lining up for you kind of thing, rather than any actual skill on your part.

Tristan Thompson is going to see significant minutes at the 5 this year.

That shouldn't be a good thing either...

Actually, I don't think it really matters the way some of you think it does. The regular season is a grind. We are going to win a ton of games no matter who is manning the center position. Tristan has shown he is durable, and we already have him under contract. We can use him, and maybe Haywood, to try and keep Andy's minutes down. I'd love us to find a rim protector in time for the playoffs. But, I don't want the team screwing every thing up in order to force fit one in this year. I can accept that we might have to wait till next off season to find one.

I think it could make his career. There is not a good reason he can't play there. He has over 7' in wingspan and he is a good post defender. He just needs reps at this point. If Chuck Hayes can play the 5, so can Tristan. He has that strong sort of base that can really hold bigger guys off.

He is listed at 227, but I think he has to be into the 240's at least. Remember Chris Bosh played a lot of 5 for Miami, and Tristan can run all day. The opposing team is going to have a hard time containing him in transition which is one of the areas Tristan excels at scoring.

He didn't play there much last year. We will see, but I think he is going to score really easily now that he is not going to be going through 3 guys.

Jan Vesely ??

Really The Bullshit Whisperer ?? How does anyone take this guy seriously ??

Other than, my expectations are along with his regarding bringing a rim protector. We may have to pay up though, considering everyone and their mom knows we need one.

Maybe: but Tristan doesn't do that well on Centers in terms of defense (at least by the limited defensive stats we have)
His OPP PER against PF was 16
His OPP PER against C was 22!
His OPP PER was also 22 two years ago.

With how fragile AV and even Love have been I'd be worried about depending on Tristan to be an adequate backup let alone starting C. We fooled a couple of teams with the Tristan starting at C gimmick a few years back when he put probably the best string of games in his career but teams appear to have a film now and have gameplanned better.
