Maybe: but Tristan doesn't do that well on Centers in terms of defense (at least by the limited defensive stats we have)
His OPP PER against PF was 16
His OPP PER against C was 22!
His OPP PER was also 22 two years ago.
With how fragile AV and even Love have been I'd be worried about depending on Tristan to be an adequate backup let alone starting C. We fooled a couple of teams with the Tristan starting at C gimmick a few years back when he put probably the best string of games in his career but teams appear to have a film now and have gameplanned better.
Well, all I have to say about this is that no one is good at C unless they get some experience at it. It's a very difficult, physical position. Andre Drummond, who is the Guy everyone wishes we had, has played more games at Center than Tristan and has an Opp PER of 19.4. 22.1 the year before. Not a helluva lot better. Tristan did have 2.6 blks per 48 as a center compared to 1.7 at pf, so there is that.
Something was going on with Tristan's D last year. Maybe the losing finally got to him, or he was trying too hard on offense or something. He posted an opp PER of 13.2 in 2011-2012, so I think he was getting burned more on Mike B's help schemes than he was when he was playing strong individual D in previous years. I am pretty sure this was one of the reasons that Griff said he needed to go back and work on his D, rebounding, and general work around the rim.
Center is not a position that you play casually. In 2009, when Wallace was hurt, and Z was tired as hell with a hurting back, they played AV against Howard in overtime in the playoffs. It was a blood bath. Howard just destroyed him. Av plays him pretty well these days instead of fouling him over and over and giving u and 1's. You have to game plan and have experience to play against centers.
So I am not saying TT is going to be great out of the gate, but he has a chance here, and I think he is big enough to play center now. He has a good NBA body, and a lot of us suspect he is closer to 6'10" than 6'9" when he came in as a rookie.
