2014 Off-Season Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
What did they exspect, first year head coach, and 3 different Qb's

I'm guessing all the people in here bitching about a potential chud firing were the same people bitching about the trent richardson trade.

Chip Kelly wouldn't have done much better here. Philly has a ton of talent offensively, anyone could see that. Chip Kelly saw that, which is why he took the job. Look at some of the positives the Browns coaching staff has gotten out of this team this year. Pro-bowl selections out of Cameron, and Gordon. While rotating in 3 different QB's, two of them have been awful. The development of our players has clearly been seen on both sides of the ball. The coaching staff exceeded my expectations. We KNEW this team was going to be bad, we just wanted to at least see development from key players, and be somewhat competitive in games. We have seen development, and we were competitive for the first half of the season, and now we got a team clearly understanding the season is just over.

I don't get the logic behind this horrendous franchise. Did they really think we should be a playoff team with Brandon Weeden, and Jason Campbell under center, and virtually no running game to speak of. To really expect anything out of that makes me really question the sanity of the front office.

I'm not proclaiming Chud to be Bill Belichick, I personally like what he's done though. And I think he's been one of the better coaches we've actually seen. The entire locker room respects him, and stands by him.

We can't get Kelly now, but his OC has worked wonders with Nick Foles.

Yeah I'd be all for taking a look at their OC as our next head coach.

What's his name? Pat Shurmur?

Oy vey.. Then when we blow next year, it'll be attributed to players who don't fit the scheme. Gotta wonder if you get O'Brien.. Does the defense switch from a 3-4 to a 4-3 again? What a debacle..

I literally left home to head up to NY to snowboard at 11 and all of this shit happens before I even get to my destination... Crazy.

I'll never stop rooting for them, but this City's teams are awfully difficult to stand behind.

5 Pro bowlers

7 straight losses

The Browns are WORSE than they were last year with Pat Shurmur.

And you guys are complaining about him potentially getting fired...it's no wonder the Browns have continually sucked. They've built a losing culture that the fans have become accustomed to. They need a dynamic leader. Chud is not that. My respect level for Banner and company goes through the roof if they get this done. If only Gilbert could do the same to Brown...

That logic doesn't fit. They didn't draft Richardson, and weren't entitled to back that pick. They hired Chud, and firing him after one year is their way of admitting their incompetent and don't have a clue what they're doing. If they think he's been that bad, why the hell should we trust their judgment in their next hiring?

Yeah firing a coach every year, and putting in a brand new system every year will result to a consistent winning foundation. Please...

Come on, who is going to win with a shitty QB tandem of Brandon WEEDEN and Campbell. These guys are horrible. You're overachieving if you can 4 games with either of these stiffs.

The Browns have been inconsistent at QB. Statistically they have not been that bad overall, though. Some teams- the Jets, to name one- have been a lot worse in terms of the numbers and yet they have better records than the Browns.

Obviously more stability and inconsistency at QB would help. But the fact remains that this team is middle-of-the-pack or better in both total offense and total defense yet is 4-11. That's the sign of a team that's underachieving, not a team doomed to lose 11-12 games no matter what.

Nope. Loved the trade.

The 2 have nothing to do with each other.

One was a RB taken too high by a different regime who was traded for terrific value that nobody would pass up. The other was a young, highly thought of 1st year head coach who was the 1st head coach by a new regime.

I don't want to assume yet, however, that these rumors are true.

Could make the same argument for Marrone who has done more with less in Buffalo.

Um, Buffalo has a monster run game

Exactly. If they do fire Chud, first question any self-respecting beat writer should ask is why the fans should have any confidence that they'll get this coaching decision correct.

It doesn't matter, Chud isn't flawless as a coach. Never did I endorse him as the second coming as Bill Belichick. It's his first coaching gig, and there's going to be growing pains. Are you automatically great at a job you've never done before in your life? Bill Belichick himself didn't have success at first.

It's stupid to give up on a head coach that fast, and you can't seriously tell me not winning 6 to 7 games, instead of 4, is a justification that a change is needed. Seriously? They're bad. They never were going to be a playoff team. You can't sit there and tell me we've had a let down year. Guess what, the Jets and Bills aren't in the playoffs. We're going to hold a guy's feet to the fire over not winning an extra game, or two, which still results in the same thing, us watching the playoffs without the Browns in it.

Those teams at least have solid running games to sit on. We have NO RUNNING GAME, and no QB. Tell me how many games a team like that is suppose to win. Come on.

I will say this much...it is not "fair" to fire Chud after one season. But if the FO really doesn't feel like he is the guy and they made a mistake, I'd rather them admit it and try to fix it immediately rather than be nice guys and give him another season, only to find out (yet again) that our head coach isn't getting the job done.

Everyone on here is pointing out that our QB situation is garbage. Pat Shurmur, Eric Mangini, and Romeo Crennel all had equally bad QB situations, maybe even worse. No one made excuses for them when they got fired. I hate to be that negative guy...but I can just see next year unfolding the way it always does...force a draft pick on a QB, go 4-12, everyone wants the coach gone.

Oy vey.. Just.. why?

Why not just name a different head coach every damn year?

Here's the thing, if they want O'Brien & they couldn't get him last season, but still liked him as a candidate, then why would hire a young, well regarded 1st time head coaching candidate & not a stopgap type?

If Chud is fired, we'll be on our 7th FT Head Coach since '99 (next year will be the 16th year)

Before the move: 8 FT Head Coaches in 50 years.

It boils down to this, Browns REALLY wanted O'Brien last year but his buyout was $20 million and there were no guarantees that his buyout would be amended at any point in time.

Chud wasn't the Browns 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or even 4th choice but Chud convinced Banner that he could evolve into an aggressive, up-tempo style of coach like O'Brien, Kelly, and Marrone, but that hasn't happened. Instead, he's indecisive and it doesn't help the fact that it looks like his players quit on him.

I like the fact that Banner is pretty shrewd. To me, it's obvious that Chud isn't the guy to be guiding this franchise going forward, and I wouldn't have said that a couple weeks ago, but it's really really bad when your job is on the line and your players act as disinterested as the Browns have over the past couple of weeks.

I've been driving the Bill O'Brien bandwagon for a while now, I have plenty of room for passengers.....

Would be one thing to fire him for Chip Kelly, but Bill O'Brien isn't exactly the dynamic offensive mind which warrants such a move, IMO.
