2015 Cleveland Browns Training Camp Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Okay I will say this here because I came here first. Johnny has made some nice throws with zip and some smart plays. He may take time but he is looking like he starting to get it. For your sakes as die hard fans I hope it is not just a pre season fluke.

You're right. He's shown a clear improvement from last season. I see a guy who can control a huddle, take snaps from under center relatively well, deliver a strike on short/intermediate throws, and move his feet 100x better than last season.

Johnny still has a lot of work to do, though. One place in particular where he still must improve is his progressions. Johnny made a lot of first read throws. Of course, he was being blitzed constantly, so many of them are the right reads. He still had trouble converting where he had to look-off receivers and put the ball in a tight spot after the first (and second) reads are unavailable. He also had some accuracy issues, which I think can improve as he gets more comfortable.

Encouraging nonetheless.

It makes me sick to admit this as a staunch AntiJFF guy last year, but I actually find myself rooting for the guy this year.

It's hard not to when your other option is Josh McCown. I get what the Browns are trying to do but him starting is just delaying the inevitable.

It is inevitable but IMO they are taking the right approach. Let him grow and get comfortable for as long as possible, if the Browns are like 1-10 then it's time to bring in John. However, at this point I think Pett has it right.

No rush to make him the starter yet...it's not like our offense is going to be gangbusters this year regardless. With that said, McCown has shown me absolutely nothing to get excited about...just another shitty Browns QB.

I would not be surprised to see Manziel named the starter by the end of the season. I'd like to see him play with a somewhat healthy first unit before pre-season finishes up.

While I keep reading a desire to see Manziel play with the first team offense, people seem to forget he would be playing against a first team defense. In the case of Buffalo, that means facing a top 3 front seven. McCown has never been one of my favorites and I've spent plenty of time bashing the plan at QB this year, but any QB would struggle against that Bills front 7. Manziel looked his best in the 4th quarter against a practice squad defense. Not bashing anybody, just reminding everyone of the benefits Manziel has enjoyed as a 2ND half preseason player. Sure he would have surer targets if he threw to Hartline and Bowe, but the corner backs would be more capable as well.

Manziel was encouraging, and I agree that I would like to see him with the first team a bit. I don't think he should be the starter going into the season, but it would be nice to get a better gage on how far he has actually come.

That being said, I agree with the coaching staff's plan of bringing him along slowly and building his confidence. You could see in his reaction last night how proud he was of himself in capping off that drive with a TD pass.

More importantly though, was anyone else concerned by how mediocre our first team o-line looked last night? I know Buffalo has a bunch of studs and blitz like crazy, but Josh was running for his life way too much. If that remains the case I don't know if we'll have to worry too much about when the coaches decide to start Johnny.

I think most of us still think the QB of the future is coming in April. My biggest worry is that we are in limbo becuase Manzeil only played 4 games, and we (Front office) think"he might be able to do it" and then Pass on a first round QB. The good thing about Manziel possibly playing more then 8 games is the decison should be clear of wether we need to comit our 1st pick as a QB.

The err of desperation for Manziel to look somewhat like an NFL QB is palpable.

I wonder if other franchise QBs have ever been handled with kid gloves and in need of so much to look semi-competent out there. I'm guessing not, but I think it's still pretty evident that his ceiling is extremely limited even in the case he is able to play well enough to beat out career journeyman Josh McCown.

Dude... He's a Cleveland Brown..

Also, I do think that there are plenty of successful QBs out there who sat and were handled with kid gloves to start their career. Most QBs don't step on the field and kill it. Even the successful first-pick guys who were tossed into the fire have had downs in their careers.

Browns getting hammered on national radio per usual.

"Why are you starting Josh McCown?"

"Pettine is going to lose his job regardless when the team sucks again this season so why not lose it by playing the QB your owner wanted"

"At least with Johnny, the city has some type of hope that his potential could come to life, we know Josh's potential"

"Theres no upside to playing McCown, the offense is so putrid and they will eventually turn the offense to Manziel"

"Manziel should start because those first 3 games are close to expected wins, good test for the kid, if he comes out 3-0 then you have something, because he got the job done"

Fans are always going to want to hand Manziel a role that he didn't earn, that's just the nature of his first round pick status.

Would be tough for Pettine to look his team in the eye and say "I know Johnny probably hasn't earned this, but we've got to see what we have in Manziel so I can appease the masses."

Don't see it being discussed but there were rumblings that McCown went to the X-Ray room for his hand, was anything confirmed about this?

Meanwhile
