Browns have last-minute meeting with Chris Conley

Cleveland’s last-minute meal-related visit with Central Florida receiver Breshad Perriman was followed by another last-minute meal-related visit in the same geographic area.

Per a league source, a Browns contingent led by G.M. Ray Farmer had lunch on Monday with Georgia receiver Chris Conley.

Conley ran the 40-yard dash in 4.35 seconds at the Scouting Combine, the third fastest time for all receivers in Indy. His 45-inch vertical was the best ever for a wideout, and one inch short of the Combine record. He also recorded a broad jump of 11 feet, seven inches.

And then there’s this: Conley wrote and directed a 26-minute Star Wars fan film entitled Retribution, which currently has nearly 490,000 views on YouTube. (Rolling Stone has interviewed Conley about his film making debut.)

Whatever happens with Conley, he’s a fascinating prospect, and the Browns were sufficiently fascinated to spend some time with him only three days before the draft begins.

Examining the Redskins, they have a TON of holes on their depth chart right now. They have no decent guards and need to replace the right tackle. They have depth problems at WR and RB. On defense they need depth in the defensive line and backfield with three linebackers who really should be replaced. A trade down would help them out a lot more than drafting Mariota.

According to the value chart 12 and 19 is far too much to give up for 5.

12 and 43 (1200+470=1670) for 5 (1700) on the other hand almost matches up perfectly... throw in our 5th rounder #147 overall (worth 32.5) and you're right there.

Redskins would take 12 and 19 for 5 if it was offered right now imo.

Browns obviously won't do that until they see who is available. I don't think they need to either.

I bet the Browns are informally dangling 12, 43, and maybe a 4th/5th and seeing how far they can move up.

Even if the Browns don't intend to move up for Mariota under any circumstance, I'm happy they're making the calls. They should probably talk with a number of people/prospects to get as much info as they can going into the draft. It's just plain smart to be diligent in the process and the bonus is nobody is completely sure what you'll do. Now, the goal shouldn't be to play coy and keep people guessing... The keeping people guessing should be the byproduct of thorough work.

Do we really have to start the whole weed debate again? Christ....

What's up with the group that did the $100,000 qb study last year? Seems like a relative pittance to pay to get that answer right.

Sound familiar? I looked up some of the coaches. Haslam interviewed all of them. The Haslams pretty much run the show there. For their latest search:

UT paid search firm $50,500 for Rick Barnes hire

KNOXVILLE — As far as coaching searches go, the one Tennessee wrapped up earlier this week by hiring Rick Barnes was as quick and painless as they come.

The search still set the university back $50,500, according to the contract between the school and the search firm, former Vanderbilt athletics director Todd Turner's Collegiate Sports Associates. The Tennessean obtained the contract through a public records request.

Tennessee paid $25,500 to the search firm upon signing the contract and an additional $25,000 upon making a hire, according to the contract's terms. Of the $50,500 total, $50,000 was the firm's retainer, while $500 came from "general office support including the costs of telecommunications and office supplies."

Only four days elapsed from the time Tennessee fired men's basketball coach Donnie Tyndall, who faces possible NCAA sanctions, and the Tuesday hiring of Barnes, the former Texas coach.

Tennessee athletics director Dave Hart told reporters on the day of Tyndall's firing that he was using a search firm for the first time in his career in order to help keep details of the search confidential.

During Barnes' introductory press conference, Hart told reporters that Turner spent Saturday night at Hart's Knoxville home. Hart also said that he instructed Turner that Barnes would be his first choice if the interest was reciprocated.

The contract with the search firm includes a clause that protects the university from the costs of going through yet another coaching change. If Barnes is fired for cause or resigns within the next year, Collegiate Sports Associates will cover the cost of retainer for the ensuing search.

Ostensibly, the scouts and GM pick the QB. Maybe last year's QB study was Banner's idea. It will be interesting to see if the Browns go back to it in the future.

Too bad the organization is 'knucklehead-shy' right now. Good opportunity to pick up 2 of the top pass rushers in the draft now.
