2016 Cleveland Indians

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Looking ahead to 2016:

The Indians currently have around $51M in contracts for next season, once they get through arbitration and pre-arb deals I'd expect them to be somewhere in the neighborhood of $80M.

Ryan Raburn has a $3M option, and given the addition of Johnson I'm not sure it will happen. Given their attachment to veteran players (see: Aviles), I'll presume it gets picked up.

Position Players:
C - Yan Gomes -- Roberto Perez
1B - Carlos Santana -- Chris Johnson -- Jesus Aguilar
2B - Jason Kipnis -- Jose Ramirez - Erik Gonzalez
SS - Francisco Lindor
3B - Giovanny Urshela

LF - Michael Brantley
CF - Tyler Holt -- Abe Almonte
RF - Ryan Raburn -- Lonnie Chisenhall -- Zach Walters - Carlos Moncrief

Pitching:
SP - Corey Kluber -- Carlos Carrasco -- Trevor Bauer -- Danny Salazar -- Cody Anderson

RP - Austin Adams -- Cody Allen -- Shawn Armstrong -- Kyle Crockett -- Deolis Guerra - Nick Hagadone -- TJ House -- CC Lee -- Jeff Manship -- Zach McAllister - -- Bryan Shaw - Josh Tomlin

Others on the 40:
Tony Wolters -- Jayson Aquino -- Ryan Merritt

That would leave the roster at 37, with Sands and Webb leaving as free agents.

Acquisitions:

Looking at the roster, the obvious problem areas lie in CF and RF. Finding a viable solve there won't be easy in a free agent class that can only be described as weak.

Not a ton of viable free agents out there in 2016:

Rajai Davis (35)
Dexter Fowler (30)
Austin Jackson (29)
Colby Rasmus (29)
Denard Span (32)
Drew Stubbs (31)

Nori Aoki (34) – $5.5MM club option with a $700K buyout
Jose Bautista (35) – $14MM club option with a $1MM buyout
Marlon Byrd (38) – $8MM vesting option
Alejandro De Aza (32)
David DeJesus (36) – $5MM club option with a $1MM buyout
Chris Denorfia (35)
Jason Heyward (26)
Torii Hunter (40)
Matt Joyce (31)
David Murphy (34) – $7MM club option with a $500K buyout
Gerardo Parra (29)
Ryan Raburn (35) – $3MM club option with a $100K buyout
Colby Rasmus (29)
Grady Sizemore (33)
Ichiro Suzuki (42)
Justin Upton (28)
Will Venable (33)
Shane Victorino (35)
Chris B. Young (32)

The other moving parts would likely come from the bullpen, here is the list of free agents upcoming for this year:

Santiago Casilla (35) – club/vesting option with a $1MM buyout
Joakim Soria (32)
Joaquin Benoit (38) – $8MM club option with a $1.5MM buyout
Jonathan Broxton (32) – $9MM club option with a $1MM buyout
Joba Chamberlain (30)
Tyler Clippard (31)
Neftali Feliz (28)
Jason Frasor (38) – $2MM mutual option with a $550K buyout
David Hernandez (31)
Tommy Hunter (29)
Casey Janssen (34) – $7MM mutual option with a $1.5MM buyout
Jim Johnson (33)
Shawn Kelley (32)
Brandon League (33) – $7.5MM vesting option
Edward Mujica (32)
Joe Nathan (41) – $10MM club option with a $1MM buyout
Darren O’Day (33)
Bobby Parnell (31)
Joel Peralta (40) – $2.5MM club option (no buyout)
Fernando Rodney (39)
Chad Qualls (37) – $3.25MM club option with a $250K buyout
Ryan Webb (30)
Brad Ziegler (36) – $5.5MM club option with a $1MM buyout

boobie, you think Moncrief actually has a future here? I think he's 26 years old and he was batting sub-Mendoza in Columbus before getting shipped to Akron. Seems like he is just wasting a 40 man spot at this point.

No, almost certain DFA candidate.

I don't expect Raburn back. I do think they'll retain Aviles. It's pretty clear that they have 3-4 dead spots in the lineup. It'd be a huge boost in Naquin was ready sooner rather than later, but I'm not holding my breath.

Just something about Jason Heyward. Id like to see him in the Tribe uniform.

Tyler Naquin will be the opening day CF. 24 going on 25, he's ready for the show. Batted .350 in 160 PA down in Akron, struggled a little bit in C-Bus, recently got hurt, but he should no doubt win the job in ST. I like him over Holt, Walters, Abe, etc.

Time to see what we got in our 2012 1st pick.

No, he won't be...

I wouldn't expect the Indians to go out and spend a ton on another long-term free agent contract. You'll see one year deals and trades.

I like Rajai Davis. He's struggled this season but he's always hit LHP and remains effective on the basepaths. He'd be a nice platoon partner with Alejandro De Aza, who has always hit RHP. Mike Napoli might be an option at DH. He's had a really rough year, but he's picked it up a bit in the 2nd half. I could see interest in Shane Victorino, although I'm not sure that would be a good idea.

Before anyone jumps on me, none of these guys are worth major financial commitments. We're talking low money, one year deals. Any significant additions the Indians make will come via trade.
