Various notes/thoughts
Connor Cook 1st Half - 9/13, 158 yards, 3 TD, 0 INT: Looked fantastic, but honestly wasn't tested by the defense too much. Good mixture of under center and shotgun. His OL allowed him multiple clean pockets which allowed him to to go through multiple progressions with little pressure. First TD pass was the most impressive IMO, stepped up in the face of blitz (RB picked it up last second) and threw to TE right before/as he was starting his inside break. Threw his man open v. needing to see him open. Another play that stood out was in the 2nd Q, MSU looked to throw a bubble screen that was blown up immediately. Rather than force the called play and risk an INT, Cook simply ate a short yard loss sack. Second TD pass was aided by a spectacular catch by #16. It wasn't a terrible throw, just slightly overthrown to a guy that was pretty open off a double move - which to be fair was aided by a good pump fake by Cook. Third touchdown was a nice touch pass over the middle with more great protection.
MSU didn't have much of a running attack to speak of in the first half, but they stick to their guns and kept pounding the rock (20 carries to 13 passes). Their offense in general is deliberate and isn't really suited for a lot of big plays, but an impressive half nonetheless for Cook.
Cook 2nd half: 6/10, 89 yards, 1 TD, 0 INT - Had a nice opening drive to start the half including another nice TD pass over the middle again to #16 again with good protection. The Spartans were generally up big the entire 2nd half so it was a far more conservative game plan.
Michigan State runs very few screens, very few options and very few package plays. It's as traditional/pro style as it gets at the college as far as I'm concerned. The level of competition today wasn't really there in terms of pass rush, but Cook looked total comfortable and in command of their offense. I don't know if he's got superstar potential like Cardale or Goff, but evaluating him really isn't too tough. He's a lot like Jameis Winston last year in that respect. What you see on Saturday is basically what he'll be asked to do on Sunday. There aren't a huge amount of "I think he'll be able to do this" questions about Cook because he's already doing those things. The only question is does he do any of them well enough to warrant being drafted in the top half of the first round.
