2019 NBA Trade Deadline

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
The reason I don't like it, is it's a move that you usually do to get one of the final pieces of a championship rotation and you have your salary cap set. The Lakers aren't there yet. If Svi takes a step forward in a year they get a better player for him. Bullock will have a small cap hold but all of that cap space is ear marked for a max players.

This is a win now mode move when they don't have the roster to be in win now mode.
This is a move for the Lakers to get into the 7th spot in the West, so they do not get the Warriors in the first round. Lakers are focused on the now for the next 3 years.

College shooting stats don't always translate to the NBA. Jimmer Fredette was a 39% shooter from 3 in college and he plays in China. If Svi becomes a solid rotation player it won't be for years.
You are correct and he would be perfect for the Cavs who will be back in "Win Mode" in two years when Svi will be ready.

Fredette was a 38% career 3-point shooter in the NBA...problem for him wasn't that his shooting didn't translate; there's just no place in the league for 3-point specialists who can't play D.

Don't let this years shooting percentages mislead you, Svi is a pure shooter who is adjusting to the NBA game and LA pressure. I think at worst, he will be a very solid rotation guy and Joe Harris is a good example of what he might become.

Joe Harris was a good shooter from moment one in the NBA. You could see it right in his first year. He's a solid defender too.

they also play different positions. There is more room for a 3&D role player at guard than forward.

Bullock for Svi is a killer trade for the Lakers, in fact one-sided enough that you wonder why the Pistons did it.

Good points. I just looked at what we received for Joe Harris in 2016. A 2020 conditional 2nd round pick. I guess we were clearing a roster spot.

True, but Svi is a guy who is a complete unknown. You're essentially trading a guy who might become a solid rotational player X years down the line if his shooting eventually translates for a guy who already is a solid rotational player and great 3 pt shooting. It's a no brainer trade, imo.

Oh yeah, I agree, I wasn't meaning to comment on the trade. Was just making clear that Jimmer didn't fail because he forgot how to shoot.

Mark down yet another trade for Detroit that I do not understand.

Stanley Johnson for Thon Maker

Stanley was expiring and shitty likely wasn't gonna get a QO from Detroit. Thon has an extra year and some rumors say they are shopping Blake so need a big to play if they do indeed flip Blake.

Totally agree with Medium. Reggie has been one of the best spot-up shooters in the NBA the last two years. He’s a great fit with LeBron.

For me it's about asset management. If Bullock plays well with LeBron then the Lakers price themselves out of being able to pay him while maintaining their max cap slots. Svi is on a small contract for the next 3 years and is tradable at anytime. If they resign Bullock then they have to wait till December to trade him. Basically the chances of Bullock being a rental is pretty high and they waste Svi as an asset at a time where Bullock isn't making a impact on them winning a title.

It's the timing of the move that is bad then the actual move itself. The Lakers have been bad about their asset management. They gave up Russell to dump Mozgov. The stretched Deng when they didn't need to. They gave up Randle also when they didn't need to. Now they give up Svi for what will most likely amount to a half year rental.

I guess I just don't really view Svi as much of an asset. Hart, Ingram, Kuzma, Ball, even Zubac, those guys are assets to me. Maybe throw Mo Wagner in there too. The Lakers are desperate for shooting and Svi hasn't been able to crack the rotation. It's certainly a win now move, but I don't see it as the kind of win now move that mortgages the future. Svi isn't much of an asset right now, and if you hold onto him you risk the chance that he doesn't develop well and drops in value even more.

Bullock won't make a difference in terms of them winning a title since Golden State is in the West, but it's the kind of move that could lead to them making some noise in the playoffs. Best case scenario, they make it to the WCF. I could see Bullock being a key factor in that happening. We all know what LeBron can do in the playoffs when surrounded by shooters. That might price the Lakers out of keeping him, but a good playoff run could make the Lakers a more appealing destination for a star free agent.

Yeah your new team is really going places.

Laugh now, but we'll see what happens by the end of this season. I remember similar takes last year when the Thunder hung 148 points on the Cavs. If they don't go anywhere then I won't be mad. No point in LeBron adding extra mileage to his body without any chance of a ring. Less playoff mileage means it'll be easier for him to march up the scoring list, which is what I care about at this stage.

Since the Cavs dethroned the Pistons, they haven't done very many things to get back to the playoffs.
