A closer look at Harrison Barnes

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Can someone please explain to me how Barnes went from a possible top 5 in last year's weak draft, to a possible non-lotto selection. To a guy not discussed at all. To now this week people being content at the idea of acquiring? Is this a statement on the reality of the draft or is there much more that we did not know.

And no. I am not going to read 48 pgs. I am not saying it is bad. I am just wondering. It just seems like a bell curve for a guy. Someone with a respected opinion opines. Then a lot of people get behind it. Suddenly MKG a lock at 2 is a "meh"?

Barnes just screams a better shooting Marvin Williams to me. Yeah they are athletic but only when they have space. They're not quick enough or explosive enough to use their athleticism as often as they would like. He will be good, but no where near an all star. I really hope the Cavs realize and take MKG, who has every advantage over Barnes other than shooting. Shooters are much easier to find than a guy with MKG's qualities.

Ironic. This draft reminds me of (not saying outcome will be) but I was just thinking, of Kentucky's guys going like UNC's that draft.

I'd also add that Beal and Williams might not exactly be soft, but they are clearly not the opposite of soft.

And he's really not that great a shooter. We're talking about a guy who shot 36% from three and 44% from the field as a sophomore. On a loaded team...with a PG who was one of the best passers in the history of the ACC.

For those who believe shooting percentage is the ultimate definition of shooting ability.

Unfortunately that's not always the case.

By that logic, Boobie Gibson (41%) is a better career sharpshooter than Ray Allen (40%).

Pistons save around $14M long-term in deal. Bobcats new head coach Mike Dunlap said teams biggest need was shooters.

Harrison Barnes?

I'm hearing that we aren't finished with trades for today, might have another one coming. Stay Tuned. #NBADraft

It's not the ultimate definition...but it's better than total conjecture. Barnes was on a team with plenty of offensive options to prevent him from being double-teamed or having to carry all the offensive weight. He was on a team that had one of the best passers in the history of the ACC and he still couldn't knock down even 36% of his threes as a sophomore.

So what reason do we have to think he's Ray Allen? Dave Telep said he was good shooter when watching him in high school? Or what?

I don't think he's Ray Allen, but he's universally respected as a damn good shooter by anyone whose watched him.

Good enough for me.

Doesn't deter me from seeing the obvious anymore than it does Beals 33 percent from distance.

I don't think either of them are proven shooters. They are certainly a better gamble as shooters than MKG (who is proven NOT to be a good shooter, at least for now), but it's not like Barnes was always taking incredibly difficult shots as his team's first option. I watched nearly every UNC game this year and he certainly missed plenty open looks.

I think his reputation as a good shooter is mostly based on the fact that he doesn't do much else and that he has good form.

His rep as a good shooter comes from him being a good shooter who needs to be game planned for.

Everyone is going to miss open looks and Barnes is certainly far from complete, he's one of the better ones out there this year.

He reminds me so much of Glen Rice. Similar athletes. Exact same jumper.

Barnes seems like a guy that will be an 18-20ppg scorer for the majority of his career. I imagine he'll have games where he goes for 40 and then games where he goes for like 15 on 5-of-21 shooting.

Don't know how much he offers outside of that.

I really don't want Barnes because of all his 'brand' business, but the more I see of him the harder I find it to dislike him.

If the game of basketball included playing against no one, he'd be my #1 pick.

But in all seriousness, I can definitely see this kid as a politician after his career is over. Very polished. Just interesting enough not to bore people, but boring enough not to be controversial.
