Alonzo Gee: Mr. April!

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Re: Alonzo Gee signs

Although he's still harnessing it, Gee's offensive upside is far greater than Sefolosha.

Love what Byron Scott is doing with Gee defensively, hiding Kyrie's present day deficiencies and keep him fresh at the same time. The league will surely adjust, but if he can at least hold some ground against guys as quick as Jennings and CP3, then there's no reason he shouldn't be able to keep it up.

If ever we contend Gee will still be our starter and play the Sefolosha role.

Re: Alonzo Gee signs

Gee has really turned it around after the bad first game: his defense has been very good.

Re: Alonzo Gee signs

He still has offensive problems of course, but he is hounding these opposing players and is a big reason CP3 and Bledsoe didn't go off tonight. It's invaluable to have a player like that. It's really the turnovers that he has to improve, and that is supposed to be one of the easier things to improve. He really needs to handle the ball better, but even if he is just a little more patient and smarter he can avoid some of these turnovers. I think when you look at how he has done defensively, there is no question he will continue to start unless someone really amazing is acquired.

Re: Alonzo Gee signs

I think Gee was just having trouble with his acid reflux the first game. Not easy to play when your chest is sore................

Re: Alonzo Gee signs

Gee is the kind of thing every fan hopes for from end of the bench acquisitions.

You get him for cheap, he develops into a starter, and contributes positively to the overall culture of the team.

I'm such a fan of this kid, and I hope that we can keep him in a big role going forward. And it helps that he's a freak athlete with tons of speed.

If anyone questions coach Scott's ability to develop talent, I think Gee is a good argument in support of his abilities. Gee has been Scott's project, and he's done a GREAT job turning this kid into a starter.

Re: Alonzo Gee signs

I'll be dissapointed if Gee is still starting next season, but his defense on the opponent's best perimeter player -regardless of position- has been one of the bright spots for the team.

If Gee plays defense like he's been playing, he can start for us until we find ourselves an amazing replacement. (via the draft) There is always room for a non-big scorer in the starting 5 and if they play the kind of defense Alonzo has been playing, you want those guys on the floor. I understand it isn't the sexy choice in terms of flash and panash but all that hubbub doesn't win us games in the end. Also, i think the last few games he's played under control on the offensive side and has made less goofy turnovers. I've been impressed as i think you can once again tell he's worked on his game.

Re: Alonzo Gee signs

I've always liked Gee. I'm a sucker for a guy who fights to make it. That said, he looks to me like the Bruce Bowen of this team. Maybe not exactly the same player, but a similar role. Eventually, if we get enough talent piled up to make a run, you almost have to have a guy like Gee who comes off the bench, plays very solid perimeter D, and can hit some open shots. Yes, he still has a ways to go, but so do the Cavs.

Re: Alonzo Gee signs

Chris Paul asked Byron Scott to stop using Alonzo Gee on him defensively.

Scott made that shocking revelation today after practice. He has been calling Gee one of the league’s best defenders for a few days and is trying to prove it by using him to defend multiple positions.

Apparently at some point during Monday’s Cavs win over the Clippers, Paul jogged by Scott and told him “take him off me” and wanted Kyrie Irving to defend him instead.

Pretty awesome, and a sign that Gee's defensive improvement isn't Byron Scott just blowing smoke.

I'm curious as to why you feel that way. We've got two young, offensive-minded guys in the backcourt who need the the ball, and neither looks to be a lock as a plus defender. Good chance Irving is always going to be a defensive liability. And I don't think you can have an upper-tier team without at least one -- and preferably two -- plus defenders at the 1/2/3. If Gee improves his midrange, he's a perfectly serviceable starting 3 on a championship-quality team who balances out the potential defensive liabilities we'll have with that shorter backcourt. Not a star, but a guy who does the stuff that gets you wins.

It would be nice to have a "do-it-all" kind of guy at the 3, but those are really hard to find, and I'd rather spend whatever ability we have to make a significant acquisition on a stud at the 4/5. The last team to win a championship without a major offensive threat at the 4/5 was the Jordan/Pippen era Bulls, and I don't think there is a 4/5 player of that caliber on this roster. If we acquire that guy, then I think an Irving/Waiters (potentially)/Gee lineup at the 1/2/3 can work on a championship team.

I love Gee, love his defense, his 3 point ability he added and obviously his posterizing slams..but every time he pretends to be kyrie and dribble like a mad man he pisses me off. It seems like its always a turn over. But seeing how he improves every year I'm not worried, all he has to do is dribble less

Maybe kyrie and dion are so good offensively cuz they're guarded by Gee in practice?

Re: Alonzo Gee signs

I did think Chris Paul looked pretty lackluster in that game like maybe he lost the "it factor" ... but maybe it was all Gee!!!

I agree with this. I was a little concerned by the Cavs' strategy in the 2012 draft to target a wing rather than the BPA (which is basically what CG said on the day of the draft). It's understandable given their weakness at the 2/3 (especially the 2). Irving and Waiters are both guys who will be high usage and who need the ball in their hands a certain amount of the time. So unless you are getting a SF like, say, LeBron James, I don't think you necessarily need a high usage, playmaker at the 3.

I think the Cavs need another 4/5 at least as urgently as a 3, and preferably a big who can provide some offense.

He has been good at getting the ball out of the pg's hands.
