Alonzo Gee: Mr. April!

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Re: Cavs make qualifying offer to Alonzo Gee (now RFA)

going rate for Gee is 3 to 4 years (really 3 years) at around $3.4 mill a season. Danny Green: 3 years $11 mill. Gerald Green is reportedly being offered 3 years/$10 mill from Indiana. Jerryd Bayless' new contract starts at $3.1 mill.

Have to think Gee is right there with these guys.

What if we DON'T resign Alonzo Gee?

What would the Cavs do if we aren't able to resign Alonzo Gee and he leaves and goes to another city. There are a decent amount of people leaving Gee out of our plan for the future (Irving, Waiters, Thompson, Zeller), while I think he is just as important as any of them... alright, not Kyrie.

But seriously, if we lose Alonzo, we really don't have a solid small forward that we can start.

Basically, we'd be left with...

- Omri Casspi, and I'm sure everyone wants to see a full 82-game season of that starting at the three.
- Luke Walton, yeah... no.
- Luke Harangody

Nobody else we currently have could really fit in at the three. Thompson is too tall, Waiters is too short, Jamison is gone more than likely...

What would we do if we cannot retain Gee?

Re: Cavs make qualifying offer to Alonzo Gee (now RFA)

Alonzo will test the FA market and eventually realize that there is no other team willing to give him a big contract. He'll then come back to Cleveland with his tail between his legs and take our offer.

Re: Cavs make qualifying offer to Alonzo Gee (now RFA)

You would think he would be loyal to the team that gave him a huge opportunity to be a part of its core. For all we know he may already be wanting to come back to Cleveland but his agent is doing what agents do best and trying to chase down more money.

Re: Cavs make qualifying offer to Alonzo Gee (now RFA)

He better get a move on, cause the money is drying up this year for most teams. Just come on home Gee, come on home.

Re: Cavs make qualifying offer to Alonzo Gee (now RFA)

Don't blame Gee, this is how the game is played. A guy like him isn't going to make tons of money in his career, so he needs to try to get what he can. Sounds like he's likely coming back to CLE because no ones gonna offer him more than we'll match at this point.

We could consider taking a look at Terrence Williams. I don't think the Kings are going to resign him, even though some players publicly said they'd want him back on the team. He seems to have shed a bit of his bad attitude, and his per 36 stats last year aren't bad. In fact, he is a bit similar to Gee, IMO.

Re: Cavs make qualifying offer to Alonzo Gee (now RFA)

Does anyone have an update on Gee's free agency? When does our qualifying offer become his contract? (if no one else offers him anything.) I don't know how all of this works; basically what I want to know is if there is a "deadline" where we will know what team he's on.

Re: Cavs make qualifying offer to Alonzo Gee (now RFA)

This could also be why the Cavs are/were taking a look at Bill Walker as well. My only concern with Gee in terms of teams making a play at him would be the Timberwolves since they missed out on Batum.

Short story is be patient. :chuckles:

Qualifying offer is in place until October 1 (it can be extended further, but that almost never happens). If Gee does not sign it, he will continue to be a restricted free agent. Cavs don't lose his rights, but he can't sign for the QO after it expires.

In the meantime, he could sign the QO (and sign on for one more year), sign a new contract with the Cavs (for one or multiple years), or get an offer with a new team (Cavs would have 72 hours to decide to match).

I'm sure the Cavs would like to get him signed and working with the other players if possible. But while he is not signed, he can also be used in a S&T (Howard/Bynum for example). Once the Howard/Bynum stuff is resolved, I think there will be a trickle-down effect on some of these teams (Rockets will sign their picks, Cavs/Lakers will fill out the rest of their roster).

As above, hopefully Kahn or some other GM who has lost out won't get infatuated with Gee. There hasn't been much talk about him during the free-agent season, as far as I know.

I love how the cavs are not bidding against themselves and are really just waiting for the process to unfold and have some time offer him something, if they ever do. To be honest... I thought teams would be more interested in him than what has shown... It really shows you no one has been watching the cavs really... even the scouts.

Hardly doubt that is the case.

Teams around the league know the Cavs have cap space, and know they can match any offer that heads Gee's way. Teams aren't interested in overpaying for him considering those factors.

Re: Cavs make qualifying offer to Alonzo Gee (now RFA)

If the Howard trade ever happens a lot of other moves will happen around the league. If the Cavs aren't involved in that trade I'd see them possibly making Gee a more compelling offer and signing a couple of vets to fill out the roster. Most likely short deals so we have a ton of cap next year.

SOMEwhat of an Update on Gee & More

Pretty cool read from The News Herald, talking about things ranging from Dion being overweight and his shooting methods, to Kyrie breaking his hand, and most importantly an update on the status of resigning Gee.

Waiting on Gee

Cavs small forward Alonzo Gee has not received any offers as a restricted free agent. Teams might be thinking, "Why bother?" because the Cavs will match any offer he gets, within reason.

Teams are now running out of salary-cap space. If the 6-6, 219-pound Gee hasn't gotten a lucrative offer yet, he probably won't be getting one.

The Cavs are just sitting back and waiting it out. They have the upper hand in this case. One source said the Cavs might try to sign Gee on the cheap.

One viable option for Gee and agent Andre Buck might be to accept the team's $2.7 million qualifying offer, much like teammate Luke Harangody did. If Gee did that, he would be an unrestricted free agent next summer.

Buck hasn't returned phone messages.
