Gee's agent probably had a meeting with one of Grant's assistants a couple days after their midnight July 1st phone call. He likely said that since his client is going to be a starter, he should get paid like a starter and then he dropped the average NBA starting SF salary, the Nicholas Batum contract rumors, the Ilyasova contract rumors, and a lot of other mildly non-applicable stuff.
If the Cavs responded with 3 years, $18 Mil like the Magic did for Jameer Nelson, Gee would have signed it faster that Harangody signed his QO. I'm also pretty confident that the Cavs didn't make an offer nearly that big, but instead offered praises about how much they like Gee, gave some feeble excuses involving the team's need for roster flexibility, shared their willingness to let Alonzo "explore the market", and set out a standing offering that was something pretty close to 3 years, $9 Mil with a bunch of unlikely bonuses and a non-guaranteed 4th year. All guess work here. No insider information. But when I looked in my crystal ball, that's exactly what I saw happening.
How will it end? Either the Cavs up their offer a token amount (10% or so) so Gee's agent can declare victory or Gee takes the qualifying offer. But that's probably still 6-8 weeks out. Let's hope Gee is staying in shape and isn't siting on a couch, eating big mac sandwiches stuffed topped with doritos like Waiters did this spring.
Anyway, this summer time posturing is all good fun. It's nice to see agents earn there money once in a while. It only gets annoying if it turns into autumn posturing.
