Anderson Varejao

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Those first two words mean a lot. If he ends up being done for the year, it will be four years in a row he has played less than 50 games. And 3 of those years he played in 31 or less games.

So regardless of cost, you have to be asking yourself how much do you want to spend against a stricter cap to keep a guy that hasn't shown he can stay healthy.

I don't want to discuss amounts. But his injuries are a legitimate concern now if they weren't already.

If injuries weren't a concern we'd be talking about an All-Star and contract numbers in the 12M+ range. His injury history brings that number down substantially, but it certainly doesn't mean we should ditch our only reliable veteran, and our only above-average frontcourt player.

When healthy, he's arguably our best all-around player. In a universe where Hawes is making 6.5M, Jack 6.3M, and Clark 4.25M, people would really refuse to pay Andy 5M/year?
it's important to note the cavs were very aggressive in attempting to move jack and already moved clark (who was subsequently cut/bought out) so those are not really the best contracts to use as justification for paying varejao however much. hawes...meh. is overpaying for a constantly healthy player any worse than overpaying for a never-healthy player? the former may be less skilled, but at least he is far more dependable.

he's basically the most injury prone player in the league over the past 4 seasons. pretty damn hard to justify keeping that around under this cba unless it is ridiculously cheap. he isn't the only "veteran presence" in the league.

5 million a year I'll do. How long? No more than 3 years, would prefer 2.

But I'm growing very fucking tired of the constant bullshit from the Cavs about Varejao's injuries. He's OBVIOUSLY not just suffering from a minor, non-serious injury. Just like he wasn't last year. I don't understand why the continue to do this, but it makes them look bad in my eyes.

I'm starting to think that we should've moved him after Tristan's first year. He's a miniature clone of Andy.

I don't care what you guys say...this team looks way more cohesive when Andy plays. They look like a team. He's the glue that keeps the other big men in line, and works great with all of the guards. He's turned into a fantastic passer. We need him. Pick up his option and don't think twice about it. He's worth it.

I'm just waiting for the news that he's out for the season because they had to amputate his arms or something

I think we gotta go into this off season with a plan here.
Either
1.Cut him to open space to make a signing
2.trade him for something we like to a team that is going to cut him to free up space(for example to OKC for a pick and Perkins or to like Chicago for Boozer and a pick. Not these specific trades but something to that effect.)
3.hold onto him and try to make a Bynum type trade before the contract fully guarantees(anyone know the date? I'm assuming Jan 7ish)

What you can't do is
4. Hold onto him all season at 9.7m.

I'm against parting ways with Andy but I would move his contract for Danillo Gallinari. The Nuggets would love to cut long term salary and he's got 3 years left on his deal, can shoot and has length at 6'10''. Let's us resign Hawes and let Deng go and bring Gallo in.

I don't see the logic in trading a player with injury concerns for a player with much worse injury concerns and a long-term contract.

1. The re-enforcements are inching closer to returning, and just in time. With the Cavs entering their most difficult month of the season, the injured guys are beginning to heal.

2.
Anderson Varejao told me after the game tonight he thinks he’ll be able to play in games next week. “I feel like I’m close,” he said. “I’m not going to be 100 percent, but if I wait for that, I’ll have to wait until summer. But if everything goes the way I think it will, I’ll be back next week.”

3.
C.J. Miles told me before Friday’s game his goal is to be back in time for the West Coast trip that begins March 12, but he sounded as if he could be back even before then. He has to get the swelling out of his ankle first, however. He is shocked at how much swelling remains in the ankle. It’s still probably about twice the size of his right ankle and the injury occurred nine days ago. Kyrie Irving has documented the whole thing. Miles said Irving has taken pictures of the ankle every day and has shot video of Miles running in the therapy pool. What he’s going to do with all the pictures and videos, no one knows. But Miles playfully admitted he’s getting tired of Irving’s photography skills.

4. I saw Dion Waiters in the hallway briefly tonight, but didn’t get a chance to talk to him. Based on the timetable he gave last time we spoke to him last Sunday, Waiters could return
next week, too.

5. As for Varejao, he has missed the last nine games, but he’s actually been hurting much longer. Remember, he missed a week at the end of January with a knee injury, and while he has no way of knowing for sure, he thinks trying to overcompensate for the knee injury may have led to the back problems.

6. Varejao’s last game was about three weeks ago when he played 43 minutes in an overtime win against the Grizzlies – and he almost didn’t play that night either. Varejao admitted he felt terrible before the game (his back and knee were both bothering him), but he sucked it up because it was the Grizzlies.

7. “It was a big game, that’s why I played,” Varejao said. “I was really feeling bad before the game, but we had Marc Gasol and Zach (Randolph). I needed to play.” Then Varejao wanted to pull himself out, but Tristan Thompson and Tyler Zeller both fell into foul trouble. And then the game went to overtime. So Varejao just kept playing. A couple of us tried waiting around to talk to him after the game, but he was still sitting on the trainer’s table an hour after the game getting treatment. “I was done,” Varejao said Friday.

Again I say, screw all of you that want to get rid of him.
