Anderson Varejao

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
If he is healthy and available to play in the finals, we'll win the championship.
He's that big of a factor.

People suddenly remember that James and Varejao have chemistry together.

People suddenly forgot that Kyrie and Varejao also have great chemistry.

And Lord help the league when Kevin Love and Varejao develop chemistry.

Varejao, 32, could become an unrestricted free agent in July 2015. Nevertheless, he and Cavaliers officials have a mutual desire to reach an agreement in the near future and continue a 10-year partnership.

Pretty much sums it up. He wants to be here. We want to keep him here. It'll get done eventually. Varejao is pretty much a lock to retire a Cav at this point, and likely have his jersey retired too.

Before the new tv deal was announced I was thinking Andy would extend/ resign for 3/15 or 3/18. Now I wonder if it might be as high as 3/21 or 3/24.

Reading Dans quotes about the how he viewed the money spent on Ty Lue and all the arena/scoreboard improvements he paid for, it's clear that spending money during this fun will not be an issue for him.

I think it was hinted at the past Andy isn't going to be greedy. He had his big contracts last time and is just looking for reasonable now... 3years and 15-18 is probably right.

The Cleveland Cavaliers are engaged in serious talks with center Anderson Varejao on a contract extension, league sources told Yahoo Sports.

Talks have progressed in recent weeks, but there's no agreement imminent, sources said.

Varejao, 32, could become an unrestricted free agent in July 2015. Nevertheless, he and Cavaliers officials have a mutual desire to reach an agreement in the near future and continue a 10-year partnership.

Cavaliers star LeBron James has a strong bond with Varejao, with whom he played six seasons before James left Cleveland in 2010 to sign with the Miami Heat.

Cleveland coach David Blatt chose Varejao to start over Tristan Thompson to begin the season, and Varejao's playoff experience promises to be an important part of the Cavs' pursuit of a championship.

Varejao is considered one of the NBA's most aggressive rebounders and defenders, elements that'll be vital in competing against the physicality of the Chicago Bulls in the Eastern Conference this season.

After fighting injuries in recent seasons, Varejao played 65 games for Cleveland a season ago, averaging 8.4 points and 9.7 rebounds in 27 minutes a game. He will make $9.8 million in the final year of his deal.

I am very curious to see what type of deal Andy gets. Although he has looked fantastic in the preseason I'm sure everyone is scared that he is going to continue being classic Andy and get injured again. I don't want Griffin to completely rip Andy off but at the same time I want to be able to look at the deal and feel like the Cavs won or got a fair deal in order keep cap space. In my mind 8 mil per year would be a loss while something like 4-5 would be a definite win.

I think about 7-8 mil will be right for Andy. Maybe even a bit more, due to the TV rights etc etc

No such thing as overpaying with this guy, in my book. Deserves every penny he gets.

The bottom line is Dan Gilbert willing to spend money into his investment and provide an amazing team an fan experience. With LeBron Love, and Kyrie we are not going to be players in the FA market. So money for Andy, Tristan, and Dion, whether its fair or an overpay, will not prevent us from signing comparable players/contracts in the FA market. Because of that it's actually imperative to our ability to either maintain talent and depth on the roster or to maintain contracts/players that can be traded and not let anyone walk for zero return value.

The Heat didn't have that option. They had LeBron, Wade, and Bosh and literally all vets and guys not worth any money. We have 3 guys worth resigning in time(Andy, Tristan, Dion) plus the taxpayer MLE and the usual vet min ringchaser possibilities. Plus our pick this year. Plus the Memphis pick. Plus the Bogans TPE. Plus the Haywood contract next year. Not saying Dan will pay 2013 Nets level luxury tax, but if he wants to, there is nothing stopping him.

Andy is what I would call a "floating" center.
Dion,Irving , delly all know he can do something positive with the ball anywhere on the court and are are all willing passers and I think his presence with the starting lineup will be key into the guards getting more comfortable passing the ball to love

Also Andy is solid at executing a play. he will all ways be in the right spot at the right time. this makes it easier for the coaches and players to identify when something is out of keel and get it corrected.

Andy typically offsets any center mismatch either on the offensive or defensive end.

And y is also one of the premier big men at blocking out opponents and minimizing opposing players times spent in their comfort zone.

AV is also the only link between the new guys and lebron.

I think Thompson still struggles with experienced physical frontcourts. If and once Thompson learns how to adapt to those matchups AV could serve a bench role but i think Thompson will benefit from having an expanded role on the second unit .

Also dont forget that Andy is close to the cure for Ebola.

Back on July 27th, I speculated Varejao would be worth 3 yrs/$20M on an extension/follow-on contract:

I built into this estimate the assumption the cap would rise significantly in coming years. I also qualified my estimate in that his value would decrease a bit of the Cavs managed to add another viable center to the roster (such as Mozgov). Well, that hasn't happened, which hasn't exactly hurt his value.

If you go up any higher, I would look to get a partial guarantee on the third year when he will be 35. I mean, I understand you want to treat Andy right, but you also have to protect the franchise's investment in him. And for reasons that I outlined in the post above, luxury tax in the 2015-16 season seems very likely anyway.
