Anderson Varejao

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Wait, so we're actually going to pay him more now that he's past his prime and has proven repeatedly that he can't be relied upon? And now we're going to hope he can play the bulk of what are going to become ~100 game seasons, when he's played 31, 25, 25 and 65 games in the past 4 seasons?

Hopefully there's a team option in there and/or a partial guarantee.

In his presser yesterday, Gilbert flat out said he didn't understand why teams who invest so much money into their roster and org spend so much, get close to the tax line, and then instead of making a final push, step back and dump salary to avoid the tax. He didn't name names but Miami, OKC and Memphis come to mind in recent years

overpaid a little but I think a lot of this is due to loyalty. won't hurt much with new TV deal anyway

It's not an overpay for 14/14 Andy. However, will he ever get back at that level? Given his injury history, it's highly unlikely. But I love Andy, and I'm happy to keep him around for some more years.

If you look at Andy's game in terms of points/rebounds then you are looking at it all wrong.

Gilbert's already said he doesn't care about paying whatever extra $ it takes to keep improving the team.

ESPN article on it:

CLEVELAND -- The Cleveland Cavaliers are nearing agreement on a contract extension with long-serving big man Anderson Varejao, league sources told ESPN.com on Thursday.

Sources said the Cavaliers and Varejao -- one of LeBron James' most beloved teammates -- are closing in on a new three-year deal worth an estimated $30 million that would kick in starting with the 2015-16 season.

Varejao has spent his entire NBA career with the Cavaliers after Cleveland acquired his right on draft night in 2004.

The Cavaliers and Varejao, sources said, have been eager to finalize terms on a new pact before the start of the new season. Cleveland opens its campaign Thursday by hosting the New York Knicks.

Varejao, 32, was in the final year of a six-year, $42.5 million pact and is earning $9.7 million this season. The Brazilian is expected to start for the Cavaliers in Thursday's opener against the Knicks ahead of the younger Tristan Thompson, who is also hoping to secure a contract extension before Friday's deadline for first-round picks from the 2011 draft to receive extensions from the team that drafted them.

Varejao appeared in 65 games last season, averaging 8.4 points and 9.7 rebounds in 27.7 minutes per game.

claiming something and actually writing the checks are two very different things. am i saying he's full of shit? no - more along the lines of "who the hell knows."

regardless, this contract is unquestionably horribly overpaying and he wouldn't sniff anything close to this on the open market. the question is whether or not that ends up mattering - hopefully not, but again we're back to "who the hell knows." only time will tell.

finally, just because an owner is willing to spend doesn't mean he should just throw out huge amounts of money without a care (see: prok in brooklyn). it's still money, and billionaire or not $30M is still a fuckton of money. in the end, the cavs just overpaid for both bigs they re-signed.

$10 million per year for three years. W-O-W.

It's an overpay --and a concern -- ONLY IF it affects future Cavs plans, ability to sign other players, etc.

If it's just money out of Dan's pocket and he's willing to spend it, what do we care?

Can a cap expert spell out team ramifications, if any?

Yay why don't we just give Tristan Thompson the max while we are at it. Tonight is supposed to be a happy night and this is already putting me in a bad mood.

Declining salary maybe? Creative structure or incentives? You want this guy to end his career in Cleveland... Maybe it sets a bar TT can't cross.

I just completely disagree that it's "unquestionably horribly overpaying".

Is it a slight overpay? I'll buy that. But not much more than that.

The guy is a good defender, has a high basketball IQ, is one of the best rebounders in the game, doesn't need the ball in his hands to be successful, one of the best passing & off-the-ball bigs in the game, and is actually still improving his offensive game (developed a consistent jumper, and his little jump hook has been crazy successful)..

Obviously, there are injury concerns, but the great part about this team is that we can afford to rest Andy & keep his minutes down.

In a couple years it will be okay... but I'm worried this is going to affect us with the Haywood contract. We can't go over 4 million of the tax without some penalties... would i believe would be something to do with the Haywood contract.
