Anderson Varejao

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
A Cav for life and arguably our best player last season...and we're balking at giving him 10M/year? There are 16 centers in the NBA making over 10M/year right now, and that number is going to go up a lot when the cap balloons to 90M in a couple years. This is a very fair deal for the Cavs.

I wouldn't have any problems at all giving him $10 mil...if he didn't miss over half of the games these past 4 years. According to my trusty abacus, he has missed 166 games over the last four years, or 53% of games. How many games does he need to miss before he is no longer valued and paid as a full-time, reliable player?

Not that we have other options with that $10 mil right now, but I'd be shocked if he earns that contract over the next few years.

Our two mediocre "centers", neither of whom even pretend to protect the rim, are going to be overpaid and locked in. It will not be easy to move Andy or TT on 3/4 year contracts making $10+ mil if that position becomes a problem for us. (not that I expect them to be moved as the first mate and skipper on the Lebron Buddy Cruise (tm).) A little flexibility and appropriate pay would be nice in what is going to be a cap-challenged team.

Dan Gilbert is just out there like

That's a very fair deal for both sides in this market.

Still nothing on the last year of the contract, specifically whether it is all guaranteed. Sometimes those details don't leak for some time after the deal is signed. Might be something like only $4M guaranteed in the final year, like his current contract.

EDIT: I had been monitoring Woj on this, thinking he'd be the one to break news on the contract details, and of course as soon as I write the post, he tweets it....So anyway, I am fine with this contract. Better than 3 yrs/$24M guaranteed IMO, which is what I was expecting.

So if Andy is worth 10 mil a year, what does that make Thompson worth? 9 mil a year?

10 mil per at his age!?

We must really love Andy.

I love that man too but this pretty much kills TT

But if Gilbert is planning in paying extreme luxury tax I can see why he doesn't care

"Andy isn't worth 10 million a year!"

And yet someone was giving Brendan Haywood more...pre-gigantic salary cap.

Somebody correct me if I am wrong but Haywood had a 4 year contract worth 16 million dollars with the first 3 years making 2 mil per and the last year (2015-2016) making 10 million. Why would a contract like that be ok per league rules I have no idea. Before that contract while he was sort of in his prime he was making around 7 mil per. Andy may be worth 10 mil per under the new cba but until we get details lets stop assuming that the new salary cap is all of a sudden going to jump to 80+ million it will likely be gradual. Lets also stop assuming that Uncle Dan is going to pay for anyone worth value to remain on this team, saying and doing are two completely different things. Lets also stop assuming that David Griffin can do no wrong and is a top tier GM, he has no past experience as the GM of a franchise. I'd argue that 10 million a year for Varejao is too high and I'd much rather have had Griffin let Varejao become a free agent next year and let him test the market. If he wants to leave for a team like the Bobcats who would likely have to way overpay for him then go ahead. This franchise is in no way indebted to Andy. He has made a lot of money over his past 6 year contract, much of which was while he was injured. Typically a veteran player would take a discount to play for a contender not to mention one that has been his home for years. Gasol whether right or wrong is regarded nationally as a much more elite player than Varejao. He just took a contract for 3 years 22 million to put things into perspective.

But to put it into perspective as well, Gasol likely won't finish out that contract, and I have to imagineAndy wont either

Okay I googled Haywoods contract to get the specifics and came up with this article:

http://www.hoopsrumors.com/2014/07/brendan-haywoods-contract.html

Basically Haywood was given a 6 year deal worth 52 million. The last year was non-guaranteed for 10.5. Haywood was amnestied under the new CBA provisions and the Bobcats claimed if for a little over $6 mil for the final 3 guaranteed years of his deal. The non-guaranteed year was not included because Dallas wasn't on the hook for that. The team who's roster he is on at that time can pay him the option or let him go. That is the part that is supposed to be key for us next year because we could trade him and then he could be cut.

Haywoods contract is so screwy because he was amnestied. His contract is for 10 million a year. Charlotte bid 2 million, hence that's why he only counts that way against the cap. Dallas pays the other 8 million, but his last year is non guaranteed.
