What I really like about Niang is his ability to find open spots in the half court offense to make a catch and shoot three easy for the player driving with the ball.
For European football, the Germans have a word for players who excel at finding open space: raumdeuter. It translates to a space invader. Niang is a raumdeuter. He constantly moves into open spots and creates better angles for his teammates to find him with a pass.
This is what I believe stands in the way of Wade being a part of the rotation in the playoffs. In the past month, Wade averages 5.4 attempts from the field for a 37% field goal percentage. Niang in the same stretch averages 9.2 attempts for a 51% field goal percentage. This isn't just a result of the ball handler looking for Niang the player more often or a different offense designed when Niang is in. It's the same offense with Niang being a smart and active raumdeuter.
