Beer snob thread!

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Yep... There was this place in Athens/OU called "Frank's Bait and Tackle" that would actually deliver cases of Blatz/Natty Light to your house. The townie that delivered didn't even look at the date or picture on your ID as long as you left him a good tip. When I was an (underage) Sophomore and living in the fraternity house, we would order cases of Blatz every once in a while... it was terrible, but I think we just drank it for the novelty.

The hunt is on.

Anyone on here try any of B. Nektar's offerings?

They have some insanely good honey meads by the name of Black Fang, Zombie Killer, Dwarf Invasion, and Kill All The Golfers.

Highly recommend checking them all out

Where do you find those. I don't see them at regular grocery stores.

I got them at a beer store in Charlotte called Good Bottle. It's like a block away from my place, so I'm a regular there. He only got one case of them in, but since I go there all the time and he knows I'm a huge fan of the show, he held two for me.

You may want to try a store that is more beer focused if there's one in your area. Or, since I think you're in Columbus, maybe the Andersons? I used to go there for beer when I lived in Columbus. I'd also call first. Distributors get things in at different times, so it may not be available where you live until later this week or even next. Charlotte is a huge craft beer town, so we tend to get big release things in earlier than it seems like Ohio does (one of my former college roommates lives in Columbus, so I chat with him about it from time to time), unless it's beer from Ohio or Michigan.

But how do they taste?

Haven't tried the new one yet, as I'm saving one for Sunday and then the second for episode three (I still have one of the three Take the Black Stouts left from six months ago for episode two). This is the third beer Ommegang has released in their (I think) four beer deal with HBO. The first one was the Iron Throne Bolden Ale and the second was the aforementioned stout. The blonde ale was really good, and the stout was pretty good as well. The stout is different because it's in the Belgian style, so it's a little lighter and sweeter than what I'd prefer. Still tastes good, though.

All I know about the new one is that it is a red ale brewed with ancho chilies. I'll post some comments after I try it on Sunday.

Just had one of these:

Nothing exceptional, but a solid 3/5 sort of IPA. And it was only three bucks for a pint, so can't complain.

I know exactly where I'd go if I was in Columbus, but unfortunately I'm at home in Chardon (ie wasteland of high school losers) for the duration of my recovery. Dang.

If you feel like driving a little I'd check out Warehouse Beverage in South Euclid. They will definitely have it, they've had the other two. Not sure what quantity they get in but I'm sure it's a decent amount.

Edit- Just checked their twitter, they got it in yesterday.

I know exactly where that is...not too bad, might have to make a trip over there. Thanks. Still getting used to driving with two feet/my left foot. :chuckles: Could use some practice.

If you're looking for a closer drive, I'd also suggest either of the Red Wine and Brew locations (Chesterland and Mentor). MANY of the beers at the Chesterland location are ridiculously old (it's called the graveyard for a reason), but Fire and Blood Wil be fine since it just hit distro. The Mentor location is brand new with a nice carry out section, a restaurant with about a dozen rotating taps, and a pretty big cigar selection/smoking room. All the employees are pretty friendly so you shouldn't have a problem. If give them a call first.

It wouldn't hurt to call the Heinen's in Chardon, either. Haven't been there in a while, but I know most of their stores have started carrying a bigger craft selection. I remember seeing Take the Black Stout at a few stores, so I'm sure they'd have this one.

Any Total Wines in your area? That place always has an amazing beer selection here. I'd go there all the time if Good Bottle wasn't so close, and that's where I always go to get the quick sell-outs like Pumking and Hopslam since they get so much of it compared to GB and the other local small stores.

Take A Sip Of A 3,300-Year-Old Danish Beer

Wanna get some real beer snob cred? With Egtved Girl’s Brew, you can sneer at your friends’ beers and their “founded in the 1800s” claims to authenticity. Because this beer’s recipe is 3,300 years old. Now that’s a legit brew.

Yes, Egtved Girl’s Brew is made from a recipe that dates all the way back to the Bronze Age, 1,370 years BCE. This brew, made in a partnership between the Danish National Museum and Skands Brewery, is based directly on the vintage stuff: residue samples taken from a bark beer bucket buried in an ancient coffin discovered in Denmark in 1921.
Egtved Girl must’ve gotten pretty thirsty in the afterlife — either that, or 3,300 years in the ground led to an unfortunate leak in her beer vessel. So the brewers and historians who determined the beer’s ingredients from the dried residue had to improvise to come up with the proper recipe.
“We had the basic list for the beer, but the challenge was to find the relationship between the ingredients, and we had to taste our way to a result,” said Peter Steen Henriksen, curator at the Danish National Museum. “So, is our new brew the drink Egtved Girl’s people took to their graves? We cannot know for certain, but it’s an educated guess.”
You can buy the ancient beer, a wheat beer with flavours of malt, honey, bog myrtle, and cranberry, directly from the Danish National Museum. Now that’s some old-school brew. [Danish National Museum via PastHorizons]

Can't remember ever having anything with bog myrtle flavour. Sounds interesting, I'd give it a try.

I've decided, this is the best beer I've ever had. Great with a steak.

I am drinking this bad boy right now:

Hot damn is this beer strong, which I guess makes sense given that it's an American Strong Ale. Still, it's delightful. It has a heavy oak finish, almost like smoking a cigar but not as obnoxious. Boozy, but not overly so. It's a good thing this is my only beer tonight, because I'd imagine adding this in with one or two other heavy hitters could put me over real fast.
