Brendan Haywood's Trade Exception

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Low post defense is exactly what we already have (in Thompson, whose high center of gravity helps aton and Varajao) so I don't see why we would need Haywood for that. Like you alluded to, what we need (and some people hope Haywood) is a rim protector.

And no, we don't have to go through those guys at all. In our own conference, I think only Hibbert fits that low post scorer role and he zones out every other game.

But you also made a good comparison; Haywood is basically OKC Perkins (def not Boston Perkins) and should def be limited to 10-15min at most during the season.

Good god not again...

Just because their not in your conference doesnt mean you have to win games against them regularly. Lets say the heavy weight centers who we might need a heavy center like haywood are Marc Gasol, chandler, hibbert, lopez, howard, bogut, pekovic. Thats 18 games this season that we go against someone that could use their size/height advantage on TT and andy. Thats 18 games that we could lose because of lack of strength.

And thats not counting players like cousins who uses his strength regularly. And assumes that young players like Valanciunas make a jump.

You have to have someone that won't get backed down by the large players in the league and takes up a bunch of room in the paint. And Haywood fits that. I could see Haywood getting DNP during many games but then in some games get 10-15 minutes.

The fact hes even able to play is great news. I'm sure hes not going to be a huge contributor night in night out and i dont know if he'll ever get what little touch he had back, but in a playoff series and against teams like indy and memphis he will have a role to play

We wanted his contract. The fact he can step on the court especially ahead of schedule rules.

Brendan Haywood is being viewed as a part-time player who can help when the Cavs face teams with tall centers, such as Indiana's Roy Hibbert. When teams have more mobile centers, Haywood no longer has the quickness to be a factor. He missed all last season with a broken foot. The Cavs are delighted that he's already playing. When they traded for him, they thought it would be January before he returned.

Lopez, Jefferson, Hibbert, Marc Gasol, Gortat, Pek and Bogut are the slower, taller starting centers I'm coming up with that he could likely body up without much risk of them burning him to either side all that often.

Jefferson can obviously score on anyone in the NBA and Gasol can if he's not facilitating and playing score-first but the other guys aren't real springy and would mostly play a below the rim, mid-range game on him.

I agree, but I would put TT on Jefferson. To guard his post moves you need an athletic, fast and mobile center.

If Haywood can give us some defensive minutes against the bigger/slower centers in the league that is a very nice bonus. We also have the ability to play a "small ball" lineup that isn't too small but can make it hard to keep the bigger/slower centers on the floor.

Dwight Howard can be pretty well neutralized on offense if you have someone strong enough to push him off his spots in the paint.
Never hurts to have different looks to throw out when the Spurs play Splitter & Duncan together.
Haywood might even help keep Drumond out of the paint.

So yeah, Haywood might be useful against 10 out of 29 teams.

They are going to keep Haywood until the offseason so his weird contract kicks in a 10M trade chip.

I didn't watch very closely last night. How did he do against the Memphis front line? Overall Id say Gasol and Randolph ate our lunch and made us pay. Andy has played well against them before, but they both had it going last night. I don't think Haywood wa out there long because he was a liability against them?

Is it strange for James to be teaming up with Haywood now after all those battles in the past?

“I think some things just come full circle, man,” said James. “We haven’t really even talked about it, but it was great competing against him, competing against those guys. It was fun.”

“The series with the Cavs were great, man,” Haywood said after Cavs practice Thursday. “We were never able to win, but it was very exciting. It was two teams that really didn’t like each other, that got after it, and it was fun for the fans to watch.”

Those Cavs-Wizards series from the mid '00s were indeed fun...I know the Cavs also had multiple battles against the Pistons and Celtics during LeBron's first go round, but there was more respect given facing those teams. The Wizards were the only opponent where I felt both teams and the respective fanbases genuinely hated each other. It got personal, there was a lot of trash talking, and that to me is when basketball is at its most fun.

And it also helps that we beat them every single time.
