Browns 2015 Offseason Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
It's about the people. If Dwight Clark or Mike Holmgren were making the picks, your statement would have some credibility here.

Neither of them drafted Johnny Manziel.

Joe Thomas reveals he's had three torn MCLs, two high ankle sprains with Browns

EREA, Ohio — Joe Thomas has never missed a snap for the Cleveland Browns, but he knows when he’s injured.

“I’ve been hurt enough to know when you are really hurt and when you are OK,” Thomas said.

One might fairly follow with the question: How does a guy whose never been injured know when he is injured?

How does a guy who has never been hurt in the NFL, who has never missed a start at any level since he started playing football in seventh grade, how does that guy know when he’s injured?

ESPN.com. In that story, he even revealed he had an LCL injury in the final game of a season and he’d have missed a month had it not been the season finale.

How does Thomas gut out three torn medial collateral ligaments?

“You just suck it up,” he said. “You’re a lineman.”

The conversation developed from talking about his near-injury in Monday’s practice when the back of his leg was rolled up on. He let out a scream when it happened, but said once he stood up and walked he knew nothing serious was wrong. As for past injuries, Thomas does have a line he will not cross, and that is ensuring playing with the injury does not risk further injury.

If he can play and not risk long-term damage he will, even if it’s an MCL.

“The great part about the MCL is it heals itself,” Thomas said. “You don’t need surgery, unless it’s really bad.”

Thomas’ matter-of-fact attitude about injury and his play remains as refreshing as any player’s in the league.

Thomas has every reason not to play in the preseason opener -- he really doesn’t need the game time, after all -- but he said he’d like to play because he thinks if everyone else is healthy and playing he should too.

Asked if he knows much about the team’s offensive identity, Thomas candidly said: “We don’t know anything yet. We definitely need some more live situations.”

Asked if he’d be extra cautious this offseason given his leg got rolled up, Thomas said: “I wouldn’t say that because I think I’m already cautious in preseason. I think everyone that’s more established kind of knows the real money is made during the season.”

This could be the most real player in the league.

And one of the most professional. Thomas says his consecutive play streak is an element of pride, but not to the point that it’s like Cal Ripken’s consecutive innings streak in Major League Baseball.

“I think there’s a pride factor,” he said. “I think just my mentality growing up … not that you’d be quitting, but if I can go I’m going to go because I’ve never quit on anything in my life. Certainly I wouldn’t quit on my teammates.”

I just read on Twitter that the Browns have asked permission from the NFL to wear the old jerseys for the season opener. WTF is Nike doing with the things?

Joe should have his number retired on the final home game of his Browns career.

I have this sneaking suspicion that in 5 years when Thomas is nearing the end we will finally have the QB of the future. Unfortunately for Browns fans, the living legend Joe Thomas will be old, injured and 2 steps slow. He will be beat off the line by some quick twitch 1st round DE and that player will roll up on the golden boy QB's knee, ending his season and eventual career. Fans will then ignore how great Thomas was and demonize him with some "Only in Cleveland" phrase.

National Football Post's Browns Season Preview: link

"On paper, the Browns look strong just about everywhere except the most key position…quarterback. If they can get good play from McCown or if Manziel lives up to expectations, then the Browns could challenge for a playoff spot in 2015."

The more I watch McCown, the more I think we will get good play out of him this season. He's already behind an elite o-line, but he'll need the running game to look a lot better than it did overall last night. Shouldn't be too much to ask.

McCown is a guy who can get us to 8-8 as long as the line holds up and the running game is above average. Anything less than that and we are staring at another 4-5 win year.

I dunno... I keep looking at the schedule, and basically after the first three games... yeowch.

Of course, things change quickly, and a good team from last year could have a disasterous year this year... but I'm not convinced the Browns have made enough improvement to make that big of a leap.

And as we saw last year... one key injury (Mack) can change everything for the Browns too, but for a first preseason game, McCown looked solid and he seems to be in command of the team.

We have had absolute shit in the receiving game. And I honestly think, without Gordon, we have a decent/borderline good WR corps. If whoever plays QB for us can put the ball in place, and PoopDick and Crowell can show some flashes, I don't see why we can't steal some games from teams we are looking at just getting slaughtered by.

Am I talking a double digit win season? No. But 7-9 isn't out of the question.

Agreed, I think with the DEF and run game our floor is 6 games, I think a ceiling is in the 9-10 range. If we could figure out the QB spot long term, we're a playoff team for the next 5-10 years.

In a 16 game season predict by when the following is most likely to happen?

* The crowd starts chanting our backup QB's name
I predict game 4

* Our Starting QB gets injured
I predict game 10

* We identify a diamond in the rough in our squad
I predict game 8

* We start calling for our coach/GMs head
I predict game 12

* We start rooting for the team to lose so that we get the top draft pick
I predict game 6
