Browns Free Agency 2015

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Housler is the best fit amongst the tight end options left. He runs a sub-4.5 in the 40, which can absolutely create mismatches if a linebacker is covering him. He seemed destined to be on a similar career path as Cameron at one point, but Bruce Arians keeps tight ends in for pass protection. I do think he can be a part-time weapon, but he has shown he isn't much of a blocker, meaning he is rarely a red zone target. DeFilippo loves using an H-Back in a multitude of ways, I hope Housler ends up being a place holder for a rookie.

Cameron wasn't much of a blocker either, so we're not losing anything there.

Housler has a nice chance to get his career back on track this year while Farmer go gets a TE in the draft, and I'm fine w/ that.

Cameron played in 10 games and had less than 80 yds in 8 of them. I dont get the hype train for what a loss he is to this team.

Not only that but here is our record with and without Cameron last year.

Without Cameron: 4-2
With Cameron: 3-7

Yes he is more talented than Housler or anyone else in our TE room, but I fail to see how we're taking a step back from last year due to his absence.

Because looking at the team record with and without the tight end and pretending it has meaning is ridiculous.

Certainly. That was a little bit reductionist and reactionary of a post by me. But it is an interesting anecdotal stat that I hadn't seen mentioned in the Cameron discussion.

The main point was not that we are better without him, but simply, what type of positive impact did he actually have last year. Was it so overwhelming that his absence now signifies a step back from what we had last year. I don't think so.

We've got a pretty good idea what he added a great deal of offensive value as a pass-catcher, certainly in ways that they no longer currently have on the offense.

Is that the difference between wins and losses? No, probably not, certainly not if you gameplan correctly and get the ball to other playmakers.

But I don't see an argument that says this offense wouldn't be better with him. Especially at the price he commanded, which wasn't much at all.

Agreed, although some people make the argument that when featured as a pass catcher in 2013, Housler has a similar skillset. Similar, not equal. But certainly closer to what Cameron provided when healthy than what Dray and Barnidge can provide.

Agreed

We set that price for him and he verbally agreed to it. Then he punked out on the deal and chose Miami for the exact same deal. I do not fault the Browns on that. I would have been cautiously(due to the concussions) optimistic had we retained him. Just do not think it is a crippling blow to lose him. And yes, part of that is based on the unknown of whether his concussion are in issue of the past or something that will continue to plague him going forward.
