Building a Gaming PC

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
A buddy of mine just got a GTX 770 and absolutely LOVES it... that would be my suggestion as well.

From what I've noticed, that is like 10-20$ off what it normally costs, right? I'd probably do better looking for RAM that's compatible with the mother board I decide to go with rather than vice versa

EDIT: The Geforce 770 looks pretty nice. What's the difference between the 2gb and 4gb models? Worth the extra 70 bucks?

RAM is RAM for what you're concerned about, it usually doesnt go on sale for that reason too.

2gb vs 4gb GPUs is how much ram your GPU has, this can affect the amount/quality of textures you can load at once, less "pop-ins". 2GB is great, 4 will "future proof" you..kinda depends how much $70 is worth to you, that was like 20% of my total budget so for me, hell no haha

At the OP's price-point, this is pretty much right. But optimal RAM clock speed is dependent upon architecture, chipset, and configuration.

For instance for a quad-channel configuration using a FX-8350 CPU, the above RAM would be ideal. For an oc'd i7 you'd want something around DDR3 2133Mhz CAS 9.

well, obviously.

I actually spent some legitimate time playing around on pc part picker today. I used the 770 graphics card (I'm pretty set on it at this point), and in this hypothetical build didn't cheap out and got an intel i7 cpu. To my knowledge everything there is compatible. Full tower case. This is far from a finished build, but I feel it's a starting point. Ended up at $1500. Thoughts?

your link didnt work :/

id honestly drop down to an i5 unless you are doing some kind of rendering/editing work on it that demands more horsepower. "If I can't notice a difference, there is no difference" is important to remember when buying tech, especially a computer when everything is so damn tempting. Remember Gour's BF3 chart? My $78 CPU ran it just as well as an i7.

but if you are doing more than gaming and have the money, then go ahead on the i7

Try that one. I agree on the i7. Chances are I'll end up either getting an i5 or an AMD like the one discussed earlier in the thread. This build is a bit more expensive than I would have wanted.

you dont need an 850W PSU if your build is only rated for 423W and its gonna be even less than that, the advertised wattages on most cards are much higher than their actual draw in my experience. I believe my 7850 only draws 60 but the box says you need like 450 or something.

went AMD, dropped the PSU wattage, pirate windows, changed to a "plain" case, removed CPU cooler and your build is now at $986.41 as opposed to the original $1600..pretty nice savings

with those savings you could even drop the hard drive and replace it with a big SSD and maybe even upgrade your monitor even more and i think youd be a lot happier

Would a mid tower be large enough? never having done this before, I'd like a lot of space to work with.

Is that CPU going to last me much time? Or should I move up and get one of their 8 core ones?

My only concern with SSD is I feel like I'm not getting much space for the amount of money.

i have a mini tower with a full sized GPU and its the perfect size. wouldnt be able to XFire in mine, but i dont want to do that..too much hassle. Most games are only optimized for dual core and sometimes quad, six and eight are more for rendering/conversion software. The CPU will handle everything for a few years to come. My 8 year old laptop still plays HD video lol. I also only have a 300GB hard drive and i have about 180GB of free space.. how much shit do you have on your HDD currently and how much can you get rid of without a second thought?
