Can Cleveland Cavaliers Survive with Smoke and Mirrors at Center?

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Rockets had been trying to make him a stretch 4 but DMo has no outside shot to speak of. He has an ok mid range shot but they play Moreyball in Houston so the players are told not to take mid range or long 2's.

He's a pretty good scorer from the low post and has the ability to block a few shots due to his length but overall he's very soft playing under the basket and will get pushed around a little..not a great rebounder either. He's the anti-Varejao type player. With that said, considering our big depth, I'd take him in a minute as a backup big on this team.

He would be an excellent backup especially because his game would compliment tristan's so well. Tristan could do the rebounding and gritty paint and DMo could do the spacing and scoring. He is a player I would give up those contracts and some small pieces to obtain. If there were people on here that liked the Idea of Ayon then they should be drooling over DMo.

That said. I doubt it happens unless they are really interested in just cutting his contract.

From Pluto:

The Cavs are quietly hopeful about Brendan Haywood. The veteran center played in some full court basketball this week at the training facility. It was the first time, as he continues to come back from major foot surgery that cost him the entire 2013-14 season. The 7-footer wants to play even as a backup. His shot-blocking skills could be a real asset.

Does anyone think Sam Dalembert would be attainable with the Utah contracts? His contract is done after this season and I dont know if the Knicks even want him. He could give us a solid 20 mins a game while coming off the bench. Averaged 6/6/1 in 20 mins last year while playing 80 games with a 16 per.

I'd rather have Alex Kirk than Sam Dalembert, personally. I hate that dude, he's a malcontent and he has been benched plenty of times on lesser teams.

The big problem with Sam isn't the production. It's the attitude. He has numbers but doesn't go out of his way to help his teammates with team defense. I think we could do a little better... But maybe that's just me.

I've been wanting Dalembert for a while now. He is veteran and still a decent shot-blocker. He also does a lot of little things. He could be had for Lucas, Murphy and Powell. I would do it for depth. He could play 10 minutes a game I would think. I don't know much about him having attitude problems.

Dalembert is the Knicks starting center. Knicks are not going to trade their starting center for Lucas, Murphy and Powell even if they decide to tank the season, which does not seem to be the case right now.

Only way the Cavs get him from the Knicks unless they give back a different starting center, and I'm much happier with Varejao than Dalembert.

Let's move this stuff in the trade forum now that the season is quickly approaching.

At this point, I don't expect any last minute trades before the season starts. I expect the Cavs are going to evaluate what they got for a little bit before making any moves.

There are 4 big dates to watch during the season where the Cavs might pick up extra depth

1) Dec 15th - Free agents signed last summer can get traded. Teams with buyers remorse sometimes make trades after this date. Sometimes unexpected players become available on this date. I don't think the Cavs will make a move this early unless there are some serious chemistry problems in the locker room.

2) Jan 10th - All player salary for the year becomes guaranteed. Teams that want to reduce payroll do money saving trades & waives in the week before this date, like the Deng trade last year. JL3's contract could make something small happen things happen here.

3) Feb 19th - Trade deadline. I think we all know what goes on here -- Unpredictable mayhem. So I won't even try to predict it.

4) March 1st - Playoff eligibility deadline. Free agents must be signed by this date to get in the playoffs. Every year, it seems like at least one quality players get a buyout and signs with a contender in the two weeks leading up to this date. If Haywood can't play or Varejao is injured, I think that this is the Cavs best option for improving Center depth. Cavs could pick up a quality rotation center like the Celtics did with P.J. Brown did in 2008.

I'm really getting worried about this position as we are so dependent on AV: Tristan at C is a real gamble IMO - his Opp PER was not good at C last year and his lack of ideal size allows guys like Gortat or Nene to bully him or just shoot over him. The East if other teams hold up, actually has some decent to very good frontlines with C's who are good offensive players (Chicago with Gasol, Charlotte with Jefferson, Washington with Gortat/Nene). Tristan put up big numbers when moved to the C spot earlier his career but teams adjusted and he hasn't been nearly effective there since then

On top of that his inability to finish like a C really could hinder what otherwise should be an awesome offensive starting lineup. Teams may do what they did to Ben Wallace on the Cavs (leave him open and rotate hard if the ball rotates to him). If he's open he's going to have go up without gathering forever as we have so many passers in the starting lineup they are going to get him the ball if he's open
