Just pointing out the decision they're faced with. They may believe he is an integral part of the team and pay him. If the internal argument is $80mil vs $90mil then they're paying him big time money either way.

Agreed, but the problem is they shouldn't be at $80 million. The discussion should be $40 million vs $90 million.

Eh, Greg Monroe got $16.5M/year, I'd take Thompson over Monroe - I'd rather have Draymond Green than Thompson though. So I'd guess right about $16.7M/year seems right.

If you think the discussion should be at 5 for 40 with Tristan than you head is firmly planted in the sands of 2012.

Are you really serious?

The cap only rose from about 9 million in 8 years from 2006 on. Including three straight years stuck at 58 million

Your concept of player worth is based on that slow cap growth era, not the era we are in now where the cap is moving from 63 million last year to 108 million in 2017-2018.

There are plenty of ways to make an intelligent case for what you see as the worth and value of what Tristan has already done and where he can grow to, but including an opinion that you think his worth is 5 years, 40 million is either naivety or ignorance of how the NBA works and where the financial landscape now is.

If guys like LMA and Love are worth 20 mil, TT would probably be worth 10-12......right?
If true, yes. "True" max players are market inefficiencies, as are good players on first round contracts.

Love and Aldridge are worth comfortably more than they're paid.

Also, with the cap skyrocketing, the 17m/annum that an 85 million offerr would cover is more like 12 on the current cap--its honestly probably not unreasonable. More in line with market value than the club-friendly deal a healthy true max player would be.

If I'm the cavs I bring up the 3 year 20 million dollar contract Ed Davis just signed. They are basically identical players stat wise. Considering Tristan gets a few more minutes a game Davis is arguably better. So Tristan should get 10 million a year more because he hustles a little more and gets .4 offensive rebounds more on more playing time?

Why haven't we gone after Gerald Green? I guess he probably would want more than the MMLE we have.

I get your point and largely agree, but West at the MMLE is a ridiculously good bargain. And I was responding primarily to those who thought getting West would mean too many guys at the 4/5.

But I do agree that we need a wing worse.. I'd hope/expect Griffin would have something lined up with the Haywood contract or vet min to help on the wing before using the MMLE on West.

Part of the way I look at this is that West is much more talented than any wing we could expect to get with the MMLE, so using that on West and Haywood on wing/backup PG is probably the most efficient use of resources.

Hard to compare guards and bigs, but I agree that West is a better player than, for instance, Stuckey. West has been one of the more consistent performers year in, year out over the last decade or so.

I think it comes down to playing time. West may be better, but a guard signed with the MLE will likely play more and have more of an impact.

Cavs have already lain the groundwork with Tayshaun Prince and can offer him the vet minimum to be a smallball 4 and backup 3.

Plus, West is 35, and as we have seen you have to start worrying about dramatic fall-off at about that age. Griffin specifically said they were targeting players in the 26-30 range and that strategy makes a lot of sense. (Prince is also older but with a minimum contract the risk is lower.)

Does one of these players deserve 16 million a year while the other one gets under 7?

Also I know this is per 36 for their careers but if you just look at last year they played comparable minutes and it looks about the same as this.

Thompson over Munroe? Are you high?

Ok, maybe not over - but if you compare their age 23 seasons, they aren't terribly far off (given their usage was totally different and Thompson was playing for a good team while Monroe was playing for a bad one).

Neither of them do, but one is best buds with LBJ. And LBJ runs this team. PG, SG, SF, PF, HC, GM. You name LBJ thinks he has the right to be it.
