I don't think it's possible for the Cavs to make anywhere near that much money with all of the revenue sharing. They will lose tens of millions. Of course, that's not counting other non basketball things that Gilbert makes money on based on the Cavs being good, but they have no chance of turning a basketball profit next year.
I think you're wrong about losing tens of millions. He will easily still make money. It might not be nearly as much as it would be but these owners are making bank. There's a reason these teams are selling for over a billion dollars.

Would you trust Johnson getting paid 30million over 3 years to bring more or less value than JR getting similar pay considering SF depth is our biggest need?
I would take Johnson every time.

Is there anyway to estimate how much money the Cavs generate and profit from the following:

1. Home playoff games: How much do they make per game and does that go into the pot for all NBA teams like regular season games or do the home teams keep 100% of revenue and profit in the playoffs. Is it different for ticket sales vs mercy or concessions

2. Road game watch parties. I assume those are free, but how much extra money is generated in concessions, mercy, etc.?

You cannot turn a basketball profit if your player payroll cost is three times the salary cap. Think about it. If an owner made money paying $200+ million in player payroll, why would the cap be $70 million? It's common sense. The Cavs also lost money the last few years LeBron was here.

EDIT - Sorry I read your comment wrong. We can always get Johnson later on, but I just don't see how he's an essential piece for our current unit. We can always roll with JR now and sign Joe Johnson later, no?

Johnson will make close to $30 million next year. If he wants to play the following two seasons for 2.5 mil a piece, i'm all for it. However, i find that unlikely.

I guess owning a basketball team isn't quite as lucrative as owning a baseball team then

The irony is that Gilbert had as much to with the implementation of the stringent luxury tax and the increased revenue sharing as anyone during the last lockout.

Its not ironic at all. This was Gilberts plan years ago when he pushed for the harsh penalties. He knew that he would be one of at most several owners willing to pay the harsh penalties. He is at a huge advantage in his willingness to essentially burn $ to improve the team. He probably agreed to close to 10 moves between July '10-July '14 that only a few owners would have been willing to make because of the high cost. The Clippers unprotected pick alone is a move that maybe no other owner would have agreed to. Then add in all the other moves after that. His 4 year plan was so brilliantly executed it is hard to describe.
