Cleveland Browns New Head Coach Search, 2014

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Anytime you can hire a guy who had a mediocre defense last year that had very similar numbers to the Browns' D... You gotta do it. Another candidate who was way down on their list, another candidate no team considered. Classic Browns.

If you get the chance to meet Pettine, the man has a presence. He's not a wet blanket like Chud; he's a legitimately intimidating guy. This is what a lot of fans wanted, I wanted, after Gase and Malzahn weren't interested. I think you'll end up liking him....

Oh, and Football Outsiders had Buffalo's defense 4th in efficiency last year, up from 27th. Mediocre you say?

Can anyone give me a background on Mike Pettine? Never heard of him.

NFL EXP:

2002–2003 - Baltimore Ravens (Coaching Assistant)
2004 - Baltimore Ravens (Ass't Defensive Line Coach)
2005–2008 - Baltimore Ravens (Outside Linebackers Coach)
2009–2012 - New York Jets (Defensive Coordinator)
2013-Present - Buffalo Bills (Defensive Coordinator)

We all know how good the Jets defense was in those initial Ryan years, but people may also try and discredit him because Ryan called plays. So...

According to football outsiders defensive efficiency ratings (which are REALLY good indicators), the Bills were #4 this year after being #27 this year. He took some really nice talent, a rookie LB and turned them into a solid group.

Good insight. Thanks.

Also, if Chud was a wet blanket. What was Shurmur. A dried up moist towelette?

Well we have seen it all:

The old guy: Palmer
The hotshot college guy: Davis
The stable defensive coordinator with rings: Romeo
The retread: Mangini
The West Coast Offense: Shurmur
The bright young offensive mind: Chud

and now...

The bright young defensive mind. Pettine

Climb aboard everyone.

It's not hard to imagine that the Browns are going to offer Pettine the job.

The fact they're trying to claim inside info and saying "hearing they're gonna do it" sounds so fucking retarded it hurts.

Just report the damn story when it happens, you have no sources saying this.

There has to be more. Guy out of retirement I think (Cowher, Gruden, etc.). Then the mediocre college guy (Marrone, Schiano, etc.). That might wrap it up. Hopefully we don't get to that point.

Jeez..

Just cause we don't hear the guy's name the first day doesn't mean he was 82nd on their list.

Hell, IIRC, he was the first one that was reported to be coming back for a 2nd interview..

Um, a mediocre D that was 2nd in sacks (57), 2nd in INT (23), T6th in takeaways (30)

The Browns had 40 sacks, 14 INT, and 21 takeaways. But yeah, totally comparable.

Buffalo also:

-Gave up their least amount of points since 2009.

-In Pts Allowed, were just 20th, but were 28th, 32nd, and 26th the past 3 years.

-In Yds Allowed, were 10th, their best showing since 2004.

After an average ranking of 22 the previous five seasons...

If this hiring does go through, I'm not necessarily opposed to it. I expect our defense would take a step forward this season and not slip up like they did at the end of last season.

As far as offense goes, just please get the right QB and we should be a much improved team in the W column.

Terry Pluto wrote about this Sunday. His source is probably the Sunday sports section of the Plain Dealer.
