I mean I guess the question is, what it all boils down to, is can he play the "point guard" on a contending team. I feel like some people relegating him to "combo guard" are also making the implication that he cannot start at the "point guard" position on a contending team.

Depends how the team is constructed. Short answer is yes, he can start on a contender if he continues to develop at a similar pace to this year.

Long answer is you need a team with other distributers. Either a Harden level distributer at SG, or a SF and SG that can distribute like a Beal and maybe Ariza.

Or take a one dimensional defensive tall pg like Ball or even a Russell and slip Sexton to SG some.

He is still a rookie, but he wont be a bust, and he might even be an all star some day. Lots of promise, and worrying about constructing a team for a run at title is still to early, but what we do know is I cant think of a player that was drafted after I would now trade him for, although obviously I would rather have Doncic, but wasn't really ever an option for us, so no point comparing.

So I did a bit of research, not much, but the PG position has changed allot in the modern NBA.

In the 90's, you Stockton, Kidd, Strickland, Mark Jackson, Kenny Anderson, etc.

The scoring pg like Mark Price was the exception, not the rule, thus you had a ton of pg's who averaged over 8+ assists a game.

In today's NBA, scoring efficiency is most important and you have very, very few over 8 assist type players, Westbrook, triple double machine, Lowry, a endangered species of a traditional pg, and Lebron, a small forward.

Sexton is a modern PG which is a combo guard. Today pg's are asked to score more than any other time ever. In todays NBA if your pg cant shoot, then your PF and C need to be able to shoot (see Philly or Bucks as Giannis is the true pg), while Simmons and Greek Freak are amazing, its much easier to construct a roster around a pg not great at assisting than a pg not great at shooting.

Of course, Simmons and Giannis are perfect players to put Sexton next too, but they don't come around every day.

Great point. Having a PG who can't shoot forces you to get that shooting from positions where it is more difficult to find.

Also Sexton is playing for a coach who has installed very little in terms of a system and plays. I think it deliberately that way for Sexton to grow his vision. We might not see the growth in his vision this year but he will have loads of tape and a new coaching staff to help create plays around what they see him do.

There were at least 3 times tonight that he drove and didn't have any outlet to pass the ball. A good coach will see that and have the shooters shift to give Sexton a place for an outlet pass.

Drew said the biggest play of the game was the hocket assist from Sexton, where he drew in the defense on a drive, then passed out to Nwaba who swung it to Cedi for the open 3.

Dude is having one of the weirdest rookie seasons I've ever seen.

He's doing something only 3 rookies have ever done from strictly a scoring perspective (16+ PPG, 40%+ from the floor, 40%+ from 3 in a season), and those rookies were Larry Bird, Steph Curry, and Paul Pierce.

On the other hand, his advanced stats are the exact opposite of those same rookies who put up similar rookie seasons to him as far as basic scoring lines go.

I am very excited to see what he comes back looking like next year. If this year has proven anything, it's how quickly he can improve. Wasn't long ago we were discussing his long 2s and how he needs to turn them into 3s. Now his last 20+ games he's taking almost 6 3 point attempts a game, and hitting them at a 41% clip while doing so.

Dude works his ass off. Can only imagine what he will do during the summer with a year of experience under his belt.

I’m sure not being invited to the rising stars challenge added some fuel to his fire. It’s so tough to tell what his ceiling could be. I think there’s a pretty good chance he’s a low to mid 20s scorer. Add any of the top 3 draft picks and we could have something special on our hands.

Sexton
Cedi
Zion
Love
Zizic

1 assist.
If you count the one he had, he would have had around 5 tonight, if the Cult hero Zizic could have either made his baby hook, or not fumble away a couple of them....lol...Actually he was looking more for his teammates at the beginning of the game more so then I had seen before.....I think going forward playing with Love he probably Guarantee 3 just playing with him and the future...

I still think you should get an assist if the guy gets fouled and he makes both free throws. It did happen with Zizic tonight. And it was a very nice pass.
