Commentary Thread - 2020 RCF NFL Mock Draft

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Can someone explain to me the infatuation with Derrick Brown? He is huge and will undoubtedly be a great run stopper against traditional running games, but I have no idea how he is super effective against quick passing and outside zone teams.

He feels like a guy you take in the late first or early second and can then accurately tell your fan base that you found your starting defensive tackle for the next six years. Because he will be great against the inside running game, he will never make mistakes that upset fans and will probably get a few nice stuffs, which means fans will love him. I just do not know if that is the type of player you take in the top-ten?

To be fair, I almost would never support drafting a DT in the top-ten, so I am biased.
Bucky Brooks just put out a mock an hour or so ago and has Brown going 3 to the Lions.
Not much of an explanation as to why, that is the highest I've seen him go on any mock.

I really value DT's. I think pressure up the middle is the one thing you can't scheme against in the passing game. I think we're also going to see running the football become more prevalent after the way the 49ers has success this season, and the Rams/Patriots the previous season--zigging while other teams zag. That being said, I don't think DT's are the pieces that will slow down the modern running game. It seems like a lot of outside zone, and plays that stress your DE's and your second level.

That being said, I'm still not really that high on Derrick Brown. I think I liked Malcom Brown more as a prospect, and he went #32 in 2015.

Clelin Ferrell is on the trade block if anyone wants him.

So, to be clear, I do think DTs will become more important against the passing game, on average, because of shorter QBs. My problem right now, though, is that I really think there are only two or three NFL DTs that make a constant impact with their pass rush.

I totally agree on the run game. I also have an article coming out on a soon-to-be-known platform that’s a regression analysis of run schemes and play-action performance. Tl;dr, the only run play with any impact in the regression is outside zone running, and holy shit is the impact large. When you can make every run and pass play look identical then you will have your opponents in knots.

The dissemination of QB Collective coaches as OCs and HCs in the NFL says to me that the outside zone scheme is going to be adopted by 33% or so of teams. You’ll also see a lot more Reid disciples with jobs. To me, the school of coaching that is dying is the Arians-style vertical passing offense. He and Kliff are the only two who I think are really doubling-down on it.

I think a lot of people are trying to find the next Aaron Donald. Derrick Brown has very good number and skills to be both a good run stopper and a pass rusher. He also went up against offensive lines in the SEC and put up impressive numbers showing he is pro ready. In regards to quick passes, if he can generate a pass rush fast enough, he could take away passing lanes for some of the shorter quarterbacks and bat down some passes.

I don’t think he has the athleticism to be as good as Donald, but you don’t want to be the guy who passed on the next Aaron Donald. By picking Brown you are hoping for the next Aaron Donald or disruptive force, but you are pretty confident that at worst he will be a good start for the next decade. Kind of a low risk - high reward situation.

Kinlaw was my backup plan if I didn't get value at offensive tackle or wide receiver. He is just too good in a 3-4. Theoretically, Jurrell Casey goes from old guy starting to super sub for the other DEs to keep fresh.

What do you think Mark Davis's hair looks like right about now?

I don't know who Mark Davis is. But I did once have a roommate named Marc Davis in college. I remember once returning to our room, and he was standing naked in the shower with a skin magazine. I didn't say anything, and just left.

I wouldn't have drafted him.

ETA: Also, that Marc Davis had pretty short hair.
