Congrats to the 27 time WORLD CHAMPION NEW YORK YANKEES !!

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
However, my point was, if this was a Cleveland team doing it (and I used the Cavs because they're the only relevant franchise in the city)-- that nobody would be bitching...

I don't think anyone is pissed at you specifically Pip. The team you are a fan of won, and you have every right to be excited and happy. As fans, we are groomed to only care about winning, since we have no say in how the team goes about spending it's money and building their roster.

My perception is that the non-Yankee fans here (with the exception of James, who roots for Boston) are upset that the "system" lacks the checks and balances of other professional sports leagues, which are designed to foster more parity. We all could argue until we are blue in the face about the pros and cons of the different systems in place.

To flip your argument about the Cavs around a little bit, let's say that the NBA was designed, as you said, to let teams outbid other teams for whatever player they wanted. And lets say that the Celtics had the financial support (TV revenue, large fan-base, merchandising revenue, etc.) to afford these players while the Cavs did not. Wouldn't you, as a Cavs fan, become frustrated if you consistently saw the best players flock to the Celtics, and win championships, while the Cavs squandered in mediocrity, maybe making the playoffs once or twice every decade?

Sure, it would be swell (as in Larry Dolan's case) if the owner would man up and spend the money to bring the players here, but most owners are businessmen, and it sometimes is not feasible from a business standpoint to spend 3 times the money you are generating on just your payroll. Of course, more fans will come out if there is a better product on the field, but the maximum number of fans that an area like Cleveland can generate will be nowhere near enough to support a tremendously large payroll for the long term. Larry Dolan selling the team may also not be the answer, as the person who replaces him will just be another businessman who's primary concern is the performance of his business from a financial standpoint.

However, with all of that said, I do agree that if an owner is unwilling to embark on some deficit spending in order to build a better product, than maybe they are in the wrong business. I think that Detroit is a good/interesting example of an owner who, although he isn't in an extremely large market (albeit a little larger market than Cleveland), he is willing to have a $100 million payroll to try and put a winning product on the field. We'll see if it works for him.

Salary Cap please, baseball should be won with teamwork, not money

Well there's teamwork in Baseball its just the quality of the team, i dont care who you are no organization should be aloud to have a roster like the Yankees.

PIP forgot to post a photo from his collection

To the best of my knowledge, baseball has a salary cap but it's not enforced as much as the NBA or NFL cap. The Yankees can pay this luxury tax that is essentially MLB's form of revenue sharing. This means the Yanks are paying other teams but the other owners are too cheap to actually use the money.

The Yanks will always have more revenue and resources because of the market they're in. Take the YES network, they would gain more revenue off of that because of the New York market compared to if the D-Backs had a similar channel. More people are tuning in because it's a larger TV market and it's available nation wide, thus more revenue.

Now granted most of what I just said is hearsay from a program I watched a couple of years ago but the problem isn't the Yankees, it's baseball. As much as I might dislike A-Rod and some of the other players, I can't knock the Stienbrinners for using their resources in a capitalist system. The 2003 Marlins were a great example of a small market, low salary team that had a miracle run but that's not going to happen every season.

There needs to be a ceiling and a basement meaning teams have to spend a minimum and there's a maximum on spending. This needs to be heavily enforced though for it to work.

LOL @ the salty fans, great posts Pip.

Anyway I'm leaving for the Canyon of Heroes to celebrate ticker tape style, damn it's a great day to be a New Yorker. And to think Steinbrenner was that close to buying the Indians but they refused to sell to him.

Props to George, Hank, and Hal for choosing winning over frugality.

Lebron said he was going to parade this morning...it will be interesting to see if he follows through.

Cant help but think that JayZ being on that float with the players is more about a message to Lebron than him being a Yankees fan...

Don't be dumb, no you wouldn't rather watch the Steelers win 10 times. You should be shot, unless you arent a Browns fan.

Grats to the Yankees. They earned it.

I second this.

That man must not be a REAL Browns fan. What a RIDICULOUS statement.

definite congrats to the yankees are in order, just wish baseball's system wasn't so fucked up. i can't hate a team that spends money when baseball's rules that are in place allow for such lavish spending...i wish dolan wasn't a cheap bastard and would spend like the yankees do

I hate the Yankees but I don't blame them for MLB's issues. It certainly pisses me off that they can use other teams as farm systems, but again, that's on the CBA and Selig, not Steinbrenner. I can guarantee you that if George was our owner (and he almost was), we'd be more than ok with him getting the best.

That said, no parody in the league is killing franchises. Thank god we have a GM that understands the mid-market business.

Worst possible end to the season. Sorry, but there's no baseball team I hate more than the Yankees and that's the way it always has been and always will be. I don't blame them for spending the money they do because they'd be stupid not to. But I hate them because they're the Yankees and they make it so easy:

Us Weekly revealed this week via a story related by one of Alex Rodriguez' ex-girlfriends that A-Rod does not have one centaur painting, but two centaur paintings. They're both portraits of the Yankee slugger as the human half. One of the pictures hangs over his bed. "He was so vain," she asserts. "It was ridiculous."

CC Sabathia told The Post last night that he absolutely would like to see his friend LeBron James in New York, and said he would tell the future free agent that New York is a one-of-a-kind city to play in. Sabathia, the Yankees ace and former Cleveland Indians star, was honored with five of his Yankees teammates at a star-studded Knicks-Cavaliers game at Madison Square Garden. Sabathia just finished the first year of his seven-year, $161 million contract with the Yanks.

"First principles, Clarice. Simplicity. Read Marcus Aurelius. Of each particular thing ask: what is it in itself? What is its nature? What does he do, this Cleveland fan?"

"He hates the Yankees."

Are CC and LeBron really such great friends? Seems like LeBron is said to be a "friend" with everybody famous. A friend is not someone you've met a few times and talk to occasionally, which is what I suspect CC and LeBron's relationship involves.

As for CC's words himself, I Was very disappointed. I like CC a lot. He came off as a MASSIVE douchebag last night, he even looked douchey with his haircut and earrings. Ugh. That said, he is a New Yorker now so why would he not want LeBron to come play in New York? Furthermore, a few words from CC is not going to convince LBJ to go there. Ridiculous. We saw firsthand how bad the Knicks are.

That said, if CC wasn't a prick, he would have been ambiguous. Maybe said, "LeBron should go where his heart is" or something to that effect. Rather than openly spit in the face of the Cleveland faithful who had his back for 10 years.

Two thumbs down, CC. I'm disappointed in you.
