Re: Welcome Dion Waiters

I want to know:

(A) How long that post took Talm to write up
(B) What kinds of things he could/should have been doing instead of writing it
(C) What the hell Talm means.

A, took 4 hours, but well worth it
B, day off, just gave up some masturbating time
c. Talm is an anagram for Malt. Got the nickname because he is a light skinned black guy. kind of malt colored.

Re: Welcome Dion Waiters

Jesus, I wish I could thank this more than once.

My "Thanks" for your post actually belongs to Talm (who apparently dabbled in Star Wars and/or Lord of the Rings fan fiction in high school).

Feel good about operating as a vehicle for my second thanks to Talm for that glorious post.

Re: Welcome Dion Waiters

i like Waiters' game, but damn he still looks small to me. he barely looks bigger than Kyrie when they stand next to eachother, and Kyrie isn't even big for a point guard. this duo could be another undersized backcourt like Steph Curry and Monta Ellis.

There's just a 3/4" difference in height between Kyrie and Dion, and yes their height is very similar to Curry/Ellis. This is a major concern.

Re: Welcome Dion Waiters

Kyrie is 2 inches taller than Isiah Thomas and Dion is an inch taller and slightly heavier than Joe Dumars.

Byron Scott was listed at 6'3" but looks taller than Dion in all the pictures I've seen. Anyway, 6'4" was the standard height for a SG back in the '80's. Post-Jordan it's been raised to 6'6". With the defensive rule changes, that's trending back down. We'll see how it works out, but Dion's height is a far cry from ideal and he doesn't have a ridiculous wing span like Wade.

Re: Welcome Dion Waiters

The amount of time we spend deliberating height and wingspan is idiotic.

Can the season start already please.

Amen. I am always amused when people speak about height difference from photographs or unverified sites, especially when the difference is < 2 inches.

Re: Welcome Dion Waiters

The big issue is this guy went to summer league looked bad injured his knee because he was caught from behind and stopped tweeting. What is up with that?

Jon I am dissappointed in you. your basketball acumen would seem to allow you to realize that height in backcourt isnt as big of a factor as the frontcourt and you seem to be in denial that one of the top DEFENSISIVE backcourts was in fact smaller.

Theres a reason that NBA teams started looking more at talent than height. Prototypical or standardized heights did not work. The NBA went downhill and the only reason we have a resurgence is teams decided to play the best players and not some mythical height difference that can be minimized on the court.

Magic Johnson and Michael Jordan were the exception not the rule.

Irving is Taller than Chris Paul, John stockton, Allen Iverson, Kevin Johnson, Mark Price, Tim Hardaway , Isiah Thomas and a list of other great point guard who bested taller guards on a nightly basis.

Dion waiters is taller and listed at 6'4 you can argue he is really 6'3 all you want but so are alot of other sg listed historically at 6'4 closer to 6'3

Dwayne Wade, Joe Dumars, etc.

Theres too much precedent for height to be a "concern" other than imaginary.

Really as soon as scott was hired and stated he intended to run and put in a princeton style offense with two guards who can facilitate. any expectation of a tall backcourt should of dissipated.

Gibson is 6'2 ad holds his opponents to a lower fg% than his taller opponents also pretty effective at keeping them from going inside.

The height concern is nominal at best.

Re: Welcome Dion Waiters

Too fat, too short, too cocky......

Seriously guys? I knbow it's the offseason and theres nothing better to talk about, but let's stop bitching about our players before they even get a chance to prove themselves.

Kyrie shits on Curry by the way (and Ellis). Waiters has potential to be a versatile scorer like Ellis. I'm so sick of comparisons on these forums though. Kyrie is Kyrie, Dion is Dion. Omri is Assfingers......wait wut?

Re: Welcome Dion Waiters

Tornicade- Irving's height isn't the issue, but he's no Eric Snow. He's not going to pickup the taller SG's, so Dion won't be exploited.

Wade is 1.25" taller than Waiters, and has ridiculous athleticism, timing, hops, quick hands, wingspan, etc, ... Dion has quick hands. There's just no comparison there.

Dismiss it all you want, but history has nothing to tell us about whether Dion will be able to defend opposing taller SGs with any success. That's on him - and if he struggles with it, it's one more reason he'll be heading towards an upside of 6th man.

Re: Welcome Dion Waiters

Quit griping about his height and let him play at least 1 game before we say he's to small... Come on people.

I don't think it's fair to make judgements on Dion's defensive abilities yet as outside of Summer Leauge we've only seen him play in a zone. And statistics show that he was one of the most important defenders on that team. The measurables don't prove anything yet.

As for the comparison between Curry/Ellis and Irving/Waiters, it's obvious that Kyrie is the clearly superior PG. And if wingspan is as important defensively as you make it out to be then there's no question that Dion will be better than Monta. Dion's wingspan = 6'7" whereas Monta's wingspan = 6'2.75".

Re: Welcome Dion Waiters

Defensive intensity is more important than physical attributes. Look at Delonte for example, he was successfully marking the likes of NJ Vince Carter and Joe Johnson, yet he was shorter, had less length, and was weaker/lighter than Waiters.

It's a fan message board, any judgement is fair ... but I don't know why you thought I was judging Dion. What I said is that the height of our backcourt is a major concern. That's not so much a conclusion or a condemnation as it is a question that can only be answered by Dion and Kyrie showing that with the help of our front court that they can get the job done.

Dion's wingspan is fine, but really any comparison to Wade at this point in his career is just silly. Dion is not off the charts in any category. Obviously there's more to defense than wingspan, but when you're taller, stronger, jump higher, quicker, and can reach farther ... you know ... it kind of helps.

West has a 6'6" wingspan, btw. He's a good example of a combo-guard who in spite of his effort level isn't good enough at either spot to be a starting PG or a starting SG - and if mentally sound is best used as a spot starter and 6th man.
