Thats my problem more than anything. Dion really shouldn't consistently be taking the most shots on the team especially in games like today when he's really cold.
The Mavs were purposely leaving him open. He passed off many open shots just to have the ball come back for a shot because he's still open. Not having Love as a zone buster really hurts.

Teams are going to leave Dion open on the perimeter. He should be taking those shots. He just needs to make them consistently. And, that's why I wouldn't be surprise if he ends up having the 2nd most shots every night during the season.

Seems fair. I doubt it will happen in the regular season.

David Blatt on Dion Waiters leading the Cavs in shot attempts every game: "I don't think he should lead us in shots."

im slightly concerned we wont understand or accept his role as the guy who gets the most open looks which translates in taking alot of shots.

not sure what you mean about his place.. his place is to play defense and get open for shots and drive the ball when has a look... not sure what you want him to do... not take shots when he is open? or pass the ball when he has wide open looks and face the wrath of james

Well if you believe he's only taking good, open looks then I guess he better be prepared to shoot 50% for the season.

Meanwhile, Blatt repeated exactly what I said "I don't think he should lead us in shots." So I guess he doesn't understand his role either....

Yeah, but that still doesn't mean he can't take those many shots. Some nights, that is where the matchup is.

If you consider how passive LeBron looked on offense, that Kyrie missed 3 games and Love/James missed one game, I have no problem with Dion taking the most shots. It's obvious that he turned into our first option on offense and was somehow our go to guy to try to create for us in those games.

Don't mind him missing 3 or off the bounce when the ball is rotated to him. Him and Kyrie really had a nice sequence where they passed twice to each other passing up decent shots both timed to get Dion a wide open 3.

On the other hand really don't like him bringing the ball up the court and taking a contested jumper without him initiating an actual play

Dion is the only starter to play all the games. he is the only starter averaging more than 25 minutes a game. with that he is averaging 13.3 fga attempts per game. irving at 13.0 in his two games. 13 shots a game at 27 minutes a game doesnt add up to Dion being the problem.

Blatt may have said that he didnt think dion shouldnt be taking the most shots every game but he didnt say dion was taking too any shots.. theres a difference. Dion is playing within the offense thats the important part. Kyrie is taking his.. lebron is doing whatever he wants ( which appears to not take the most shots) and love is working things out on his end

Absolutely no reason Dion should be taking that many shots per game, especially when he's that cold.
I don't think most of the shots he took were bad shots. He was wide open most of the time, he just missed the shots. The bottom line is, the result wasn't good:conf (8):

It's only half the battle. It's a make or miss league. So let's say every single shot Dion took was within the offense and a good, open look. If that's the case then 4/15 is really quite bad, isn't it? Everyone has bad shooting nights but generally those come when guys are having to create for themselves and force shots. You're telling me that isn't the case with Dion so then 4/15 really isn't acceptable.

I don't expect him to be 1st, 2nd, or 3rd during the season in FGA. LBJ is purposefully playing passive and Love's minutes have been down. But if his shot attempts so far in the pre-season somehow magically ends up playing out in a similar way in the regular season then I think we have a problem.

I think the key here is that Dion hasn't missed a game yet, whereas every other member of our three main guys has. We've also been resting guys during the fourth quarter where normally our starters would play. Putting too much stock in pre-season stats is pointless, especially when you take the missed games (or half-assed ones, in LeBron's case) from all our starters into context.

I mean, did anyone give two shits about us losing tonight? Or winning that Heat game during garbage time when our scrubs were playing? Both outcomes were equally meaningless. It's pre-season.

^^^ I would like to win every game, which isn't realistic.
But yeah, Dion took good open shots. That wasn't the case other nights. He needs to be consistent though. They're leaving him open for a reason

^ This.

There isn't anything wrong with him shooting within the flow of the offense, he just needs to make his shots. I don't think he's going to be a problem in the regular season because if he tries to do too much, coach Blatt will not hesitate to take him out of the starting lineup. He needs to be more consistent. It's okay to take open shots, but that doesn't mean that you should take every quick open shots you get.

He always starts the season slow, but he has as many good games as stinkers. He is just finding his rhythm. No way will Lebron and Love defer so much in the reg season, so he needs to find his place now. Still, if everything else is shit down, Dion needs to take those shots. Driving to the hoop is important as it usually gets him going. When he hoists 3's out of the gate he can go cold easily.

I understand that it is the preseason so the number of shots of role players like Dion are going to fluctuate but during the regular season Dion NEEDS to let the game come to him and be content with taking anywhere between 8-12 shots a game. I can't handle watching him shoot off the dribble when much more capable scorers are on the floor (i.e. LeBron & Kyrie). I only want to see him attacking the basket or taking spot up jumpers, none of this dribbling off 6 seconds of the shot clock and taking some stupid fade away jumper. I know he thinks he might be just as good as Kyrie, but on the offensive end it is not even remotely close.
