I understand that it is the preseason so the number of shots of role players like Dion are going to fluctuate but during the regular season Dion NEEDS to let the game come to him and be content with taking anywhere between 8-12 shots a game. I can't handle watching him shoot off the dribble when much more capable scorers are on the floor (i.e. LeBron & Kyrie). I only want to see him attacking the basket or taking spot up jumpers, none of this dribbling off 6 seconds of the shot clock and taking some stupid fade away jumper. I know he thinks he might be just as good as Kyrie, but on the offensive end it is not even remotely close.

Exactly.

I also think he might be on thin ice with Blatt without even knowing it. If bad iso sequences will hurt the team in a regular season game Blatt can stick him to the bench. Having coached in Maccabi Blatt can be a bit ruthless with guys not playing winning, smart basketball and/or understanding & accepting their role within the system and their place in the pecking order.
I can see in Mr. Waiters that "I am every bit the player Kyrie and Kevin are"... attitude and he best believe it won't serve him well on a David Blatt coached team.

Dion Waiters has gained a reputation of being a bit of a chucker during his first two NBA seasons, and despite the Cavaliers adding LeBron James andKevin Love in free agency this summer, he has yet to curb his high-volume shooting.

Waiters has led the Cavaliers in field goal attempts in all five of the team’s preseason games, and head coach David Blatt knows that probably isn’t the best way to maximize the weapons on what should be one of the league’s most explosive offensive units.

From Chris Haynes of Cleveand.com:

Head coach David Blatt was asked about Waiters’ rapid field goal attempts and the coach paused, making sure he chose his words carefully before responding.

“I was thinking about that at halftime, actually,” Blatt said. “Remember that we didn’t play with a full roster tonight and our normal rotation was not what it will be. The way that Dallas played led to a lot of open perimeter shots, which Dion is going to take because that’s what he does.

“I don’t think he should lead the team in shots. On the other hand I don’t really care. I just want us to take good shots and make them. But we’ll look at it. It’s something we really should look at it and we will.”

Waiters isn’t just leading the Cavaliers; he’s seventh in the entire league in total field goal attempts during the preseason, despite logging just 27 minutes per contest.

Blatt knows that Waiters getting up the bulk of his team’s shots is not the path to a championship season. He’s not making a huge issue out of it now, nor should he. But it is something he’ll need to address moving forward once the games begin to count for real in a couple of weeks, and it sounds as though he’s planning on doing exactly that.

yet there are probably three or even 4 guys who have taken those type of shots more frequently than Dion has.

Im not sure why every mistake or bad habit Dion has seems to get escalated to the critical level and strongly exaggerated
btw people seem to be forgetting a part of the quote

sorry for the double post but I find it dissapointing that Chris haynes chose to go with the direction Dion is the problem instead of that other guys may need to step up more.

it seems clear Blatts take is that he doesnt care if Dion is taking the most shots but why he is taking the most shots needs to be looked into.

Dude get real. Dion has taken the most shots each of the 5 preseason games so far and that's worrying. Even as a fourth option, I'd be okay with him taking the most shots every so often but when you're on a team with 3 All Stars, you shouldn't be doing it every game. I don't care if it's the preseason and guys have been sat out. Most of these games he's played with at least 2/3 of the Big 3, yet he still feels like he's the first option.

If I'm not mistaken, I'm pretty sure he even took the most shots in the Wine vs Gold Scrimmage lol.

Dion is going to get a lot of open shots for two reasons. First, defense will always be tilted toward LeBron, Love, and/or Kyrie when they are on the floor. Second, because Dion is very good at getting to open spots. He has taken some bad shots so far, but he does that when he isn't comfortable with the offense and when there is no player movement. This is his third coach in 3 years. With a whole bunch of new guys around him. As he gets comfortable he will be fine. He is our best backcourt defender and around 40% from 3 so far, so it would be pretty stupid to put him on the bench.

He's only played one game with 3 other all stars.

It is pretty obvious he needs to adjust his game/attitude. Him telling Chris Haynes that no adjustment to his game was required this far and he can take any shot he wants is very telling. It will be interesting what happens when the season starts. Blatt won't accept some BS iso sequences that throw the offensive flow out of whack. Dion also said that there will be big 4 or 5 at the end of the season. I went over the Twitter timeline of Chris Haynes and you get there all the indications you need that Dion is a dude who is not quite over himself.

Which is why I mentioned he's played most of the games with 2/3 of the Big 3. And the fact that he even took the most shots in one game with all of them playing is still crazy. When you have a guy like Kevin Love out there or Lebron and Kyrie (much less all of them playing) Dion shouldn't shoot the most. Plain and simple. People here like to think Dion is just as good as Kyrie and deserves as many shots but there's a reason why Kyrie is a 2 time All Star and 2-time MVP (FIBA and ASG). I like Dion but he's going to have to learn his role once the season begins or Blatt won't put up with him.

I don't think this is a problem. Dion played all the preseason games but Love, Bron and Kyrie all missed games. In the season all of them will be there and they'll put up NUMBERS. So he won't force his way to shoot cuz there's veterans to mentor, a REAL COACH to coach. Again it won't be an issue.

20 shots? Bomani and our new bandwagoners might be waiting a while before they cancomplain about that. He took 20 or more shots 8 times last year. 3 times when Kyrie Irving played.

Dion seems like the type of guy who will probably never be over himself.

But there are probably some people who don't have a problem with attitudes like that, which is one reason why opinions on Dion differ.

Lol now it's a problem to have confidence in yourself. Always something with some of you guys...
