Re: Welcome Dion Waiters

im not worried about the offense. He can seemingly get to the rack at will. can't stand his standing around and ball watching on defense. His man would already be halfway on the other side of the arc and he's still there looking at the C dribble the ball. hope he can get that ironed out by the end of training camp. Love him otherwise though. I see where some people get the wade comparisons with his slashing ability.

edit- his man to man defense is wayyy better than the last 2 games. i.e its actually there.

Re: Welcome Dion Waiters

Hopefully our coaching staff can fix the fade on his jumper. He looks pretty explosive going to the basket.

His on-ball defense actually seems to be a strength. He takes it personally, he fights through screens, he really pesters people. You're right though, off the ball he does get caught watching too much.

I did see something I liked in that regard today though, he made a really crip and proper rotation on Markieff Morris and stopped a lay-up. His awareness seems to have begun to pick up in that regard.

Re: Welcome Dion Waiters

Just joined the forum. I am a native Clevelander who also went to college up at Syracuse. So, I follow the 'Cuse and the Cavs very closely.

People should not worry too much about Dion. Having seen him play essentially every game over the last 2 years, I can tell you, he just had two bad games. He actually turned into quite a solid shooter in his second year. I would chalk this up more to random statistics than him not being able to shoot. Having said that, he certainly benefits from a tough coach who will tell him how it is. I think Byron is absolutely perfect for Dion and really believe he will thrive next year. The kid is beaming with confidence--to his own detriment on games where his shot his off (like the last 2). Normally, he is quite a consistent player..really only having a couple bad games last year out of 30+ (one being OSU of course).

No need to overreact, because the light will turn on at some point (probably in the next few games) and everyone will see the potential they keep hearing about. Even though he did not start, he was by easily the best player on Syracuse last year. That team was one of the best ever at 'Cuse (barring Melo's suspension). I have total faith in Dion and I am not a total 'Cuse homer either. I never thought Flynn or Wesley Johnson would be good NBA players, but it was blatantly obvious with Waiters.
Very nice thought out first post

Re: Welcome Dion Waiters

After watching him for 3 games I understand the comparisons to D-Wade as there are some similarities. One thing is for sure so far his jumpshot makes Alonze Gee's look like Reggie Miller(it's only 3 games but good shooters tend to only have 1 or 2 bad shooting games in a row). When Wade came in the league even after 4 years of college his jumpshot was very mediocre. He worked and worked at it till he eventually turned it to a solid part of his game.

To me the defining part for Waiters will be how hard he works to improve his shooting ability. No jumper he'll be mediocre. He works and works and gets a decent one he will be a borderline all-star or better. Remember Wade had 4 years of college and Waiters 2.

Re: Welcome Dion Waiters

He's been the, by quite a wide margine, the best passer on the court in the two games I've seen. His jumper isn't falling, but he's good at getting into the lane and better than advertised and dishing once he's in there.

Wade had 3 I think.

Re: Welcome Dion Waiters

Great interview by Waiters after the game. Very insightful and engaging with the the announcers; definitely didn't big shot them. He knows his jump shot is outta whack and what he needs to do to correct things; release is off, he's off-balance, shoulders not squared, etc. He seems to be VERY hard on himself and Brent Berry told him at the end of the interview to "Relax, Dion, you're playing great." This kid is gonna be great.

Re: Welcome Dion Waiters

I just dont see it and ive watched all three games, he has looked very mediocre to me and im typically the biggest Cavs homer, he can get to the rim at times, but doesnt finish well and his shot is way off right now...hoping conditioning and playing with Kyrie will help him...just not sure if he was the right pick for this team, seems to need to the ball a lot to be effective, which kyrie does too --- maybe im just over analyzing it

Considering the kid hasn't played an NBA game yet, i think it's the latter.

Re: Welcome Dion Waiters

Wade had 2. He was ineligible his freshman year. Played his soph. and junior years.

Ah ok. See I knew he was a Junior because I remember his games against Cincinatti that year all to well.

Re: Welcome Dion Waiters

This is not meant as a knock on Waiters at all, but I do not see why anyone would compare him to Wade.
