Re: Welcome Dion Waiters

I just dont see it and ive watched all three games, he has looked very mediocre to me and im typically the biggest Cavs homer, he can get to the rim at times, but doesnt finish well and his shot is way off right now...hoping conditioning and playing with Kyrie will help him...just not sure if he was the right pick for this team, seems to need to the ball a lot to be effective, which kyrie does too --- maybe im just over analyzing it

Wade and LeBron need the ball to be most effective and they won a championship. Kyrie is a great shooter and he doesn't have the size to constantly slash.

This is not meant as a knock on Waiters at all, but I do not see why anyone would compare him to Wade.

His slashing ability.

he's obviously not going to be Wade right now. If you can't see that their playing styles are extremely similar then I don't really know what game you've been watching.

I do see the comparison regarding his ability to get into the lane, but it's not at Wade's level - at least at this point. He's also not the finisher Wade is, and doesn't appear to have the jumper either. He's not going to be Wade, so we should probably drop that comparison.

Overall, I'm very excited about his ability to get into the lane, and think he could end up being one of the best in the league at getting to the rim. He also seems to have a fire at times, and that should welcomed on this team. But the bottom line with his jumper is that's it bad now and must be fixed if he wants to become elite. Not real big on hypotheticals, and am more in the camp of believing when I see it.

Tonight, we saw some positive signs which were missing the 1st two games. He does have a quick first step and I am very interested to see what he looks like if he could lose 10-15 pounds, but he has a long way to go before his play making ability should be compared to Wade. I think a taller Ben Gordon maybe a poor mans Mota Ellis. I was encouraged from what I saw tonight. Still do not like the form or release on his jumper, his lack of size when matched up with taller Sg's and his defense leaves alot to be desired. However, I assume he will work hard and be in shape for October. If he shows up in the same shape then there should be a lot of questions about his true desire to become great!

Re: Welcome Dion Waiters

I'm not overly concerned with his shot. I think it's mostly tied to the conditioning. His shot looks lazy at times because i think he's playing with heavy legs...and a heavy body.

I was overall enouraged by what I saw tonight. Despite being a little chubby, he's still able to get to the hole pretty easily. He did a nice job creating for other guys, they missed quite a few open looks he got them.

Not great, but a good game.

maybe you just dont know what a volume scorer and how that will create opportunities for Irving and less likely to try and force things.

as for his off the ball play, also maybe youve just been napping on waiters when Campbell comes on the court .

Having a volume scorer along with an efficient shooter like kyrie is gold. Having one that can pass and plays aggressively is platinum.

and kyrie is effective no matter what you have him doing on the court.

anyways here is what i see when I picture what it might be like for this backcourt potentially.

You are... but the people demanding he's going to be great because of what they've seen so far are even worse.

I do not think their styles are all that similar. Wade scores over people and above the rim. Waiters seems tethered to the ground. That will obviously read as a knock, but its not. Plenty of players are effective at finishing around people and using their girth as an advantage like Waiters rather than using elevation like Wade often did.

But I aint no scout.

Re: Welcome Dion Waiters

Full disclosure I haven't seen the Suns game from tonight yet but it seems like tonight was more of the same....

I'm not trying to be an ass here, but I wonder how many people around here have ever played real organized team basketball before.

When I watch Waiters right now all I see is a guy who's head is spinning. He looks like he doesn't know where to be on the floor and is completely out of rhythm. This is to be expected from a rookie, especially a guard. He has barely practiced. People need to realize how hard it is to play on a new basketball team in a new system in a new damn elevated league. Give the kid a damn break. He's not even had a training camp yet. It's not even like its the pre season. These are scrimmages. I don't want to sound like an excuse maker, but the little practice he did have he practiced with Kyrie and now most of what they worked on quickly is now moot.

Anyone who is negative on Waiters right now are missing the obvious positive signs right in front of your face. As advertised, he gets to the rim when he wants, and has made some nice finishes I see people ignoring. He can drive and dish very well, better than advertised. He can handle the ball in traffic. He has tremendous handles for a 2 guard. His help defense sucks right now but his man to man is respectable. Again, back to the thinking too much thing, he is used to zone.

His jumper is off, big freaking deal. Yes, he leans and doesn't get his feet under him, that is completely fixable. What i like is he has good touch and a nice arch. The ball rotates the right way in the air. These are good signs which in my opinion will improve with the inevitable practice he will do. Remember he had a better 3 point shooting percentage than both Barnes and Beal.

He is a bit of a chucker, this should not be a surprise to anyone. Chuckers look like shit when their shots are off. We were told he was streaky with his jumper. When this kid does hits on his jumpers (yes he will sometimes) he will be deadly. This kid has tremendous tallant and takes the game seriously. All signs point to a great work ethic and he doesn't get in trouble off the court. Playing ball is all he does. Kyrie is thrilled we picked him. He brings this team a swagger and an attitude we don't have on this team. He DOES have superstar potential. He doesn't take shit from anyone and he's not scared of anyone. Root for the damn kid, don't overlook the positives he has already shown.

Re: Welcome Dion Waiters

The ability Waiters has shown with the ball could totally negate the Cavs' need for a backup point guard. Him and Sloan showed some nice chemistry and I think Gibson could be deadly behind the arc catching driving kick outs from Dion.

They still need a bigger guard that can shoot and defend. I guess that could be Kelenna Azuwhatever.

It's Azubuike and he can play if healthy. He just hasn't been in years. Hopefully this is that year and the Cavs got them a good backup in the other part of the Zeller trade.

You aren't off with your observation that Wade is more of an above the rim type of finisher than Waiters, however, their height, weight, position, scoring mentality, and ability to drive to the basket with excellent body control are part of what fuels the belief that they have a similar style of play.

This is just a select play, but Wade's elite and unique style of splitting double teams particularly in pick and roll situations is something Waiters seems to mimic - albeit a single play, more ammunition for the comparison.

Re: Welcome Dion Waiters

You can say what you want about how he will play off the ball when he seems to be more comfortable with the ball but Miami showed that if you have 2 scorers that can get their shots you will be very good. As far as spacing the floor…that's what role players are for. Having 2 guys that can break the defenses down and get their own shots helps especially in the playoffs. I like what he's shown so far. Sees the game at different angles than other IMO.

watching that vid really got me excited for what the Kyrie and Waiters duo could be. Having 2 dynamic guards in the starting lineup is going to be spectacular. I have a feeling that this upcoming era of Cavs basketball is going to be the most fun to watch of any era. Lebron's teams won games, but watching Lebron dribbling at the top of the key for 20 seconds on every play was not enjoyable basketball. I'm ready to watch a real team, not a one-man show. and that's what we have here, a real team. the next few years are going to be fun. We've got 2 explosive guards, and 2 agile big men. And if Gee comes back, you know he can throw it down. it's going to be showtime people. that lethargic Lebron-era offense is long gone.
