This summer I'd like Chuck Ellis to set up in the paint with a shorter broom so that Waiters can start workiing on some alternatives to getting blocked at the rim. I'd like to see some YouTube videos this summer of floaters, teardrops, bank-shots, pull-ups and other additions to his arsenal. This is not as important as other things, like staying aggressive, hitting his FTs, and not settling for long-twos in the wrong situations, but I'm interested in how his game may expand.

I thought his progress on defense this year was just as noticeable as his improved shooting. Despite what Jason Lloyd wrote on multiple occasions, he looked more than competent at times, even if consistency was an issue.

And I'm most surprised that Dion pouted, got benched, was rumored to get traded multiple times, generated one of the best off-court rumors (punching Kyrie), and ended up the season as a player who gained more respect in the locker room, garnered more praise from the fanbase by year's end, and managed to improve in measurable ways during the course of a challenging season. Good for him.

I guess that means he'll get traded before next season. :chuckles:

Absolutely. Statistically, Dions shot from 3-10ft is his worst by far. Improve that drastically over the next two years plus a little improvement in finishing at the rim and you have a dynamic offensive player that can contribute to deep playoff runs.(hopefully for us)

29. Dion Waiters’s Jumper

There are still issues with Waiters’s shot selection, especially when he pulls up for long 2s early in the shot clock. But he shot much better from long range this season, and there were games in the second half of the season where he looked unstoppable for long stretches. And, man, does that jumper look wet when it’s on. Waiters arcs that baby so high, increasing the likelihood of a pure swish. How high? On long 2-pointers, no player’s shot trajectory reaches a higher average peak, per SportVU data provided to Grantland; Waiters’s average long 2 tops out at 15.6 feet above the ground. And on 3s, only four players reach a higher peak than Waiters’s average of 16.5 feet above the floor: Jamal Crawford, Jordan Crawford, Dirk Nowitzki, and Jeremy Lin. The thing just looks pretty.

don't usually expect to see the media say anything but negativity about any Cav

Here's a Christmas card for everyone, courtesy of Dion Waiters.

Build hard, D Waiters. Shittin' on these ginger bread haters. :chuckles:

I went into NBAwowy and did some on off comparison and the team defense performed much better when Waiters was on the court. When Dion and Irving was both off the court the defense played far worse.

I would put Waiters as a team defender = Underrated

I would post the numbers but goto nbawowy and see for your self (be sure to put bynum off court. his work is tainted.)
!

I just dove into Dion's advanced metrics a bit more. He holds opposing point guards to a 10.6 PER, opposing 2s to a 14.2, and opposing 3s to 11.0. That's pretty exceptional. If he improves his shot selection, finishing around the basket, and/or learns to draw fouls better, and simply give 100% effort consistently, we could be looking at an elite 2. All his flaws are very fixable considering he's still only 22, the same age as rookie Dwyane Wade. I'm hoping his shot chart looks a lot more like James Harden's next year. If he just cuts those long 2s from the top of the key, he's gonna explode next year.

Looking at playoff defense I want him able to knock those long 2's down.

Every once in a while, it's fine. The defense is generally willing to sacrifice those because it is the most inefficient shot in basketball. I think he shoots around 43% on midrange shots, which is about league average. I look at James Harden as a model for offensive efficiency. He is basically all 3s and layups, as is the entire Rockets team. Dion and Harden both shoot about the same on their mid range jumpers and 3s. Harden is a much better finisher in the paint. The difference is that Dion takes 38% of his shots from mid-range, while Harden only 18%. If Dion can rid himself of those pullup 20 footers, he's gonna be legit.
